Kevin McCarthy's historic House humiliation

Kevin McCarthy lost his first, second, and third bids to become House speaker. This is hugely embarrassing for the California Republican, who, [as my colleague Inae Oh notes](, "has been singularly focused on clinching the role for years." Meanwhile, the newly elected Rep. George Santos (R-NY), under investigation from authorities in both the United States and Brazil, has looked quite [lonely](. I hope your new year is off to a better start than McCarthy's and Santos'—and I hope that those of you who traveled for the holidays have been able to get to where you need to go. Thanks to those of you who wrote in about your holiday travel experiences. Many of you had frustrating journeys, but others shared gratitude for being able to travel and for the infrastructure that gets us from point A to point B, even if it takes a while. I want to give a special shoutout to the reader who described her daughter's "crazy and stressful" experience having multiple flights rebooked, spending hours on the phone with various airlines, and being unable to get to her destination. Amid all that, the emailer took time to thank a "stellar" flight crew. I hope to show that much grace in 2023.
