Money Morning Live Starts Now! [Click here to see why it’s rocket fuel for your money.](   March 21, 2023 Dear Reader Good Morning, Momentum Is Red. (turning yellow) Markets continue their positive run this morning following an announcement by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen that the US government is prepared to backstop a greater amount of deposits for banks if necessary. During a prepared speech to the American Bankers Association on Tuesday, Yellen acknowledged that the recent actions taken by the government were not aimed at helping individual banks but were intended to support the entire banking system, though she refrained from using the term "bailout." As a result, traders are now anticipating a 25-basis-point rate hike at the conclusion of the Fed's two-day meeting tomorrow, a significant shift from the expected 50 bps increase before the recent banking crisis triggered by Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank's collapse earlier this month. However, with the ongoing questions about the viability of First Republic Bank and the recent deal with UBS and Credit Suisse, the Fed must prioritize ensuring the financial system's stability. So we will have to wait and see what Powell has to say following the meeting, as it will likely influence momentum one way or the other. It's worth noting that regional banks are currently experiencing a surge, with the SPDR Regional Bankings ETF (KRE) up over 3% following recent news. This is particularly noteworthy, considering the ETF had dropped over 30% within the last month. The positive development here is that we now have a clear path to trade in this volatile market. While it's best to steer clear of certain names such as First Republic (FRC) and Pacwest (PACW), I will be shifting my focus towards companies with[limited duration risk]( and many[insured deposits](. This makes them attractive takeover targets for potential buyers in the coming months. Today on the Morning Show, we'll be discussing a range of topics, including the unique structure of the CS take under deal, Shah Gilani's tech sector prediction post-Fed meeting, Jamie Dimon's potential to save First Republic, big money's betting on OXY, and the importance of never just "seeing what happens" in trading.
