Hype in your marketing, and whether its a good thing or not. I'm mid-way through a 12 hour journey, and have 20 minutes before my next flight... so lets get right to it. Usually when new marketing students of mine are talking about hype in the sales videos they've seen online, they talk about it as if it's a bad thing. But hype is actually a good thing. Hype converts. Hype is what will allow you to spend $1 on traffic and make back more than a $1 in sales. Hype is absolutely necessary if you want to have a high converting offer, and you want to be able to acquire hundreds, thousands, or even millions of customers. Now, I'm not talking hype in terms of gross exagerations where marketers cross the line, and are blatantly lying about what their product or service can do. I'm talking about presenting the benefits of what your deal can deliver in the best possible light, when you know it can deliver the results. Hype sells. Whether you're a rock-n-roll band like KISS, or you've got some miracle pill that you're convinced will change life as we know it, or you’re a local restaurant with the best BBQ this side of the Mississippi. Hype makes people sit up and take notice; it's bigger than life and lots more interesting. The consummate marketer P.T. Barnum knew it, and marketers ever since have made it a part of their sales repertoire. Think about some of the best sales funnels and marketing systems you remember. They’re usually big, bold, audacious, it's explosive! Your ads and sales letters that attract new customers must be that way, too, because you absolutely, positively have to grab their attention. Think about the direct response TV commercials you see. Every great direct response TV commercial says something like this, over and over: “You must act now, because if you don't, you're going to miss out on the greatest ever super-duper cooker, slicer, manipulator you've ever seen in your life!” What they're selling is not merely a fancy potato peeler – but the greatest revolution in kitchen technology ever! They promote that way because they must, but also because it works. You absolutely have to hype your promotions, just like P.T. Barnum did. He was the world’s greatest promoter. You don't want to lie or cheat or do anything illegal, but within the bounds of what’s legal and moral, you must hype it up! This strategy works like magic. Hype is what helps get people to raise their hand and say, “Tell me more!” And it helps to convert those leads into customers. Your first goal is to capture their attention, and then capture their order. The more outrageous, the better. I want people see a headline and say, "What the heck is that?" Because when they do, they have to read more. That's really your goal. The more you can build outrageousness, bold, explosive stuff in your copywriting, the better. This will help you cut through the cloud of everything else and get their attention. Otherwise, your message is going to quickly be overlooked and forgotten. If this kind of hype doesn't appeal to you, keep in mind that this is what has always worked, and it's what always will work. P.T. Barnum knew it 150 years ago, and it's still true today. One of the most famous marketers in the world once said: “All business is, is applied psychology and measurement.” In order to succeed in your business, you've got to understand the math and the psychology of salesmanship.
