I get it. You're thinking, "Fall gardening? Isn't fall when we're wrapping things up?" I used to think the same. Sure, September's garden is often still bustling, but as October rolls in, we're down to the last hurrah of pumpkins, winter squash, potatoes, and maybe some apples. So what's left to do that counts as gardening? Turns out, quite a bit. Depending on your neck of the woods (or your USDA zone, if we're being fancy), you've got options. Quick growers like radishes can still make a showing in September, even October. And those cool-weather lovers? Kale and spinach are practically begging to be planted. For you folks in zones 4-6, cold frames are your ticket to stretching the season a bit further. But here's the kicker - gardening's always got one foot in the now and one in the what's-next. While planting kale might be all about the present for you cooler zone folks, there's plenty of future-focused action too, especially if you're lounging in zones 7 and up. Fall's prime time for getting that garlic in the ground, prepping your soil for spring's grand entrance, giving fruit trees a haircut, and dividing up those perennials. And for some lucky ducks? It's not an end, but a whole new beginning to the growing season! One thing I’ll say about fall gardening is that, believe it or not, it takes more organization than summer gardening. In summer, everything is out and abundant. You don’t have to wonder where your cucumbers are planted or worry about getting something done before the ground freezes. It’s different in the fall. We know our warm days are limited and some of the vegetables we plant won’t come up for another four or five months. That’s why I love having a seasonal calendar to help me keep track of everything. At least where I am, if I wait too long to clean out the garden and prep the soil for spring, the ground freezes and I can’t do anything. Likewise, if I miss my window for planting garlic, I have to resort to buying garlic the following spring and summer. Have you seen the price of garlic lately? Ouch! I also find it helpful to have reminders about things like cleaning and sharpening my garden tools. And I know those of us in colder climates might laugh, but gardeners in warmer planting zones can actually start some of their seeds in late fall and early winter! I don’t know about you, but I can always use a reminder about starting seeds. These are just some of the reasons we put together this 2024 Food Gardening Network Fall Gardening Calendar! For me, it’s the trick to keeping all my gardening plans and tasks organized. This printable kit is practical, beautiful, and it includes a list of tasks for each month of fall, from September through December. This is more than some ordinary old calendar, though. You’ll find fun facts here about tomatoes, cold frames, hydroponic gardens, and more. For example, did you know peanuts aren't nuts, they're a legume, and have more protein, folate, and niacin than nuts? Not to mention, you’ll see the important gardening holidays are all here, such as National Pear Day! [FGN Calendar] Beyond keeping track of all your favorite vegetable-related holidays, the printable 2024 Food Gardening Network Fall Gardening Calendar is the perfect way to stay organized. You can: - Enjoy reminders for gardening tasks in September, October, November, and December. - Take notes and prioritize planning for your specific garden. - Learn how to turn those delicious fall vegetables into even more delicious meals. You read that right. This 2024 Food Gardening Network Fall Gardening Calendar isn’t just a calendar. Because gardening is about harvesting and eating as much as it is about planting, I added some of my favorite fall recipes to the calendar using fall crops like wheat, carrots, kale, winter squash, and sweet potato!
