Neither will we. - Honor His Legacy]( Dear {NAME}, “I might’ve been given a bad break, but I’ve got an awful lot to live for.” With those words, Lou Gehrig bid farewell to bleachers full of fans on the verge of tears or well past it. So many gathered there at Yankee Stadium were still in disbelief: Their hero, the “Iron Horse” of baseball, had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He couldn’t play the game he loved anymore. It felt like a tragic end to an era. But despite this “bad break,” Lou’s speech was filled with gratitude and hope. He had met wonderful people, made lifelong friends, and basked in America’s love. “I’m the luckiest man on the face of the planet,” he declared. Lou would lose his battle with ALS two years later. But his spirit of eternal optimism lives on in the work we do. His widow, Eleanor, joined forces with MDA to help shape our focus on ALS, and decades of progress are now leading to life-changing discoveries. Today, on Lou Gehrig Day, I want to thank you, {NAME}. [For the hope you give MDA families to persevere, just as Lou did.]( I’m so proud to have you as a partner, and I like to think Lou would have been, too. Gratefully, Donald S. Wood, PhD President & CEO, Muscular Dystrophy Association Honor Lou Gehrig With a Gift That Continues the Fight [Gehrig baseball jersey]( When you give $100 or more to MDA today, we’ll send you this special #4 Gehrig baseball jersey.
