As a child, I was surrounded by all types of music. It embodied me. It enveloped me. It made me who I am. My mother was an opera singer. She went to Juilliard and made her debut at Lincoln Center. She noticed my musical ear when she was singing an aria at her piano and I memorized a section—in Italian! Obviously she was quite taken aback. Still, she never forced me to go the classical route. I was free to follow my own creative voice. Nothing was more important to me than music. As a young woman, I went through my own struggles in the music industry and ultimately realized my dreams of becoming a recording artist. In my class, I’ll introduce you to the Butterfly Lounge, my private sanctuary where I make music with my band, write lyrics, and create with other artists. I’ve never opened up about the many ways I use my voice to create new music. And I’ve never even considered letting cameras into my musical oasis before. So this is a first for me—the beginning of a new chapter of my life when I finally feel confident enough to reveal this very sacred element of who I am. I'll show you how I collaborate with a string quartet and use my voice—my instrument—to communicate. We’ll reinvent and dissect one of my favorite and most personal songs, “The Roof.” I’ll also open up about my journey as a writer and producer, revisiting the moments when songs like “Fantasy” came to me and exploring the process of bringing those songs to life. I want you to see how freeing music can be and how you can use your voice to pursue your biggest dreams. Let’s do this.
