If AI can generate creative content, identify audience segments and plan and execute campaigns, what are marketing agencies for? That’s very much the question Jim Ewel raises in [this piece]() and his answer is not entirely pessimistic. One thing I’d add to Jim’s commentary is that the big holding companies (Dentsu, Publicis, WPP and the rest) saw this challenge coming. Their response has been to funnel significant investments into AI technology that can be deployed across their many operating agencies. That should give the agencies a head start in doing AI at least as well as their clients. The question, as Jim points out, remains whether smaller, independent agencies can keep up.
