The short answerâmaybe. The minimum wage has been increased in 50% of U.S. states in 2024, and itâs on track to increase incrementally in many locations. The purpose of raising the minimum wage is to lift people out of poverty and improve their overall standard of living. Seems simple enough. But some experts say thereâs a downside to raising the minimum wage: ⢠Higher inflation. Companies forced to pay workers more will charge more for their goods and services. ⢠Shortened schedules. Employers make up for paying workers more by giving them fewer hours. ⢠More layoffs. Employers could trim their budget by cutting the number of workers on the payroll. Research is mixed as to whether any of this actually occurs. A Real-Life Experiment A 2021 study analyzed data from over 5,000 employees of a national retailer with employees in California (which had higher wages) and Texas (which did not). In California stores, workers had fewer weekly hours, lower benefit eligibility, and less-consistent schedules. The study concluded that every $1 increase in the minimum wage led to an 11.6% decrease in total compensation for hourly workers. The University of California at Berkeley, on the other hand, has done extensive research on the impacts of raising the minimum wage and predicts the following benefits: ⢠A more robust economy and increased economic development in low-wage areas. ⢠A reduced pay gap between workers of color and their white colleagues. ⢠Reduced crime, improved health in children; even reduced suicide rates. ⢠Lower government spending for safety-net programs such as food stamps and Medicaid, and billions in new tax revenues. If youâve been the recipient of a wage increase recently, there is some timely good news. Price increases declined sharply in June, meaning that inflation may be coming to an end. How can candidates showcase their skills and experience during an interview in a way that's memorable for the recruiter? Have clear and concise answers. Know exactly what youâre looking for. Mirror your energy to the person interviewing you. Have specific examples or achievements ready to be discussed. What are some tips for showcasing a strong work ethic, safety awareness, and problem-solving abilities in an interview setting? Come prepared. Have clear examples and situations that have happened to you where you either came out unscathed, or what you learned from your mistakes. Do your research online by reading everything on the company website (to the point of being able to knowledgeably discuss the safety program they have in place). If itâs not clear on the website what they do when it comes to safety, ask good questions about their process. Any HR person will be thrilled if someone brings up safety so youâll get brownie points there. How can candidates with limited formal education make a positive impression during an interview and convince an employer of their abilities? Have professional conversations and keep the tone light. Have clear examples of why you feel youâd be a fit for a particular position. Try not to come across as if youâre entitled to the position. Have reasons for gaps in employment and if itâs something negative, be prepared to discuss what you learned from that situation and how itâs helped shape you as a professional now.
