A few years ago, I stumbled on a surprising tidbit about how one of the richest men in the world determines intelligence. Turns out, Jeff Bezos had observed: “...the smartest people are constantly revising their understanding, reconsidering a problem they thought they'd already solved. They're open to new points of view, new information, new ideas, contradictions, and challenges to their own way of thinking…” In short, they’re willing to admit they’re wrong. And often. The good news is, apparently Bezos would consider me a genius 😂. Because I get things wrong, and admit to it, quite frequently. Like one of the biggest mistakes I made in my earlier years of business: Thinking that “content” wasn’t that important. In my defense, it made sense to me at the time. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I remember thinking, “Look, I’ll focus on creating really great products. And if I communicate that well enough, I don’t need that much content.” On the plus side, I got really good at the “sales” part of online business - webinars, funnels, advertising, sales calls, copywriting. But I was wrong. Content IS king. At least if you care about creating something meaningful, feeling proud and fulfilled by your work, and of course - making more sales. And these days, it’s more important than ever. In fact, according to a study by PR Newswire, eighty-two percent of people (82%!) have purchased from a company as a result of consuming content published by that business online. Plus, in my own data from thousands of clients these days, I see a similar percentage of respondents saying that my content was a key factor in their purchase decision too. What’s more, I’m going to go as far as to admit: A lot of the slightly more advanced topics I teach on? You can get away with not having those in your business. Especially in the beginning. But the content piece? Let me put it this way… I often say I wouldn’t redo anything if, for some reason, I had to start over again. Because my mistakes led me to where I am today. But here I am, once again, admitting I’m wrong. Because there IS one thing I’d probably put more focus on from day one. And that is: Creating more content. Back then though, I wouldn’t have thought it possible to do — because it felt SO overwhelming to create even one piece of content a day. But that’s because I also didn’t know what I now know about content creation…that makes it a lot faster and simpler. And tomorrow, I’ll share a huge AHA that helped me decrease my overwhelm.
