A few days ago, in the afternoon during a heat wave: I stop in mid-sentence as Falco sighsâ¦for the third time in the last three minutes. Heâs bored and wants to play, but Iâm in the middle of recording a new course (got some awesome new stuff coming out for you later this year!) and Iâm in laser-focused, get it done mode. But I also donât want to leave Falco by himself while Iâm recording, so here we are⦠Sighing and pausing. And OK fine, fitting in a few short play sessions in between too. Which probably made my recording session about three times longer than it needed to be, but you know whatâ¦worth it. Iâve got my priorities straight. lol. But Iâm at the tail end of a massive burst of creativity, and per the norm when Iâm at this point, Iâm really feeling my love-hate relationship with creating new products/things. As a side note in case youâre curious: These days I wait until I get the inspiration to create a new course or training. It usually happens about two to three times a year. But as soon as I get it, I run with it. I believe that ideas are gifts and itâs our job to use them. But if I were creating my first or second course, Iâd probably go with the tried-and-true method of leading with market research first. But back to this whole love-hate relationship⦠I really love creating and teaching. Personally, I think itâs one of my gifts and something Iâm meant to do. In fact, I canât NOT do it. I get âitchyâ if I go too long without creating something. But when Iâm so âinâ it that itâs all I want to do and think about, well, it does get to a point where it feels likeâ¦. I want my life back! But I also canât stop until Iâve pulled out what needs to come through. Look, Iâm not complaining. Maybe Iâm a creative masochist. Probably. Because ultimately, itâs always worth it. But before I made my peace with that, I did actually think that there might be something wrong with me. Especially in the earlier years of building LZ.com. Like when I really couldnât be bothered to think about marketing myself on social media (back when I had to do that) or coming up with a new ad, because all I really wanted to do was have space to sit, think, and create. Turns out though, Iâm not the only one. Far from it! And in fact, being able to have the space and time to think, recharge, and/or createâ¦whatever it is you want that time for, is so important to being able to actually grow your business. You know, so you can think about where you want the business to go. So you can actually think, learn, and grow yourselfâ¦because you gotta keep on doing that to grow your business too. And if youâre like me, so you can do the deep work that sets you apart and feeds your soul. But itâs hard, almost impossible, if you keep on having to pull yourself back into doing the marketing and sales in order to keep the business going. In the earlier years of LZ.com, I solved this problem using paid ads. So I could free up my time and basically buy growth instead. I still recommend this strategy from time to time for specific situations and clients, but you gotta know what youâre doing so that youâre not just throwing money down the drain. Plus, the longer I do this, the more I appreciate all the benefits â for you and your business â of leading with value instead. Which is why over the last few years, Iâve put my money where my mouth is, and shifted to driving growth via content. But not just any type of content. Especially not social media, because that is an endless hamster wheel. Not to mention a rollercoaster of emotions and feast-and-famine cycles depending on if the algorithm gods decide to favor you this month. Weâre talking content that lives on your website forever (so it keeps on working for you month after month), gets you found by your dream customers, and brings them TO you. Instead of you constantly having to go out there and do the whole âmarketing grindâ to get them. Itâs the reason why I get to do my thing â even when Iâm in the âhateâ part of the love/hate creation cycle â and know that the business is continuing to grow on its own. And itâs also why Iâm so passionate about helping as many coaches, consultants, service providers, and course creators as possible, add this to your business. Because business should be more fun, and fulfilling, than having to grind through your marketing every day so you can pay the bills.
