Throwback to when I was a business youngin just two or three years into building LZ.com… During a group dinner, the 8-figure business owner sitting across from me — respected as one of the best in his field — gives me a nod of respect. “It’s one thing to make 7-figures in a year. It’s a whole other ballgame to do it year after year.” I’m embarrassed to admit that I arrogantly thought at the time, “Really? Like that’s a big deal?” But it did plant a seed in my mind about the importance of sustainability over one-time wins. And I was reminded of that during a recent conversation with a private coaching client when she said, “I researched your past private clients, and saw that they’re still doing really well…” Yeah, I should hope so! Because I’m not here to just help you make your next sale, or $5,000, or even $500,000. Yes, that’s part of it. But the way I see it, my “job” is to help you build a business you love, that lasts as long as you want it to . Which is a completely different mentality and skillset than what most other business coaches teach. But there’s a reason why most of the coaches who started around the same time I did, aren’t around anymore. Here’s how I think about it: The most important thing, above all else, is to have a strong foundation. That means a strong offer — something you can both sell and deliver well. Plus knowing how to sell it consistently. Plus at least one consistent source of lead generation to start. And until you have these three things — which is what I teach in my flagship Employee to Entrepreneur program — you put on your blinders and don’t get distracted by a single thing else…until you’ve got them. Because once you do, you get to play. And I recommend starting with adding a “burst” of growth and income into your business. Using, in my opinion, the best way to do that — a group program or course launch. Which is what I teach in my Ultimate Course Launch flagship course. This kind of launch will also boost your credibility via more testimonials and customers. Not to mention add a new asset — your group program — to your business lineup. Plus give you the opportunity to learn how to coach and teach in a group setting. All of which will also help you transition to creating and selling self-study courses that scale your business even further while generating “passive income.” In a nutshell, that’s the “strategy.” It’s a lot. But it’s also not that complicated. Just takes a lot of hard work and commitment. But this is where people get sidetracked… Trying to find that next elusive shortcut or shiny object. Here’s what I have to say about that: There’s a BIG difference between developing a new skill (and knowing how to apply it as things change) versus chasing a new shiny object. Skills — that’ll keep your business growing for as long as you want — include learning how to write a good email, whip up a strong sales page, create a profitable webinar, build a unique online presence, and change the way you think about money. That’s why I’ve created the courses I have, that teach these things. To help as many people as possible develop these skills for themselves. Because they’re also the ones I’ve personally focused on — ‘cause you know I’m always walking my own talk. And I know they’re the reason why I’m still here, closing in on my ten-year mark. Whereas shiny objects, and the people who sell them? Think about it… How long do those people last? Do they even actually do what they teach? Something to think about.
