Picked up this gem a while back from a Tory Burch interview: “You have to have your own identity. That’s what’ll separate you no matter how crowded the market becomes.” Obviously the lady knows what she’s talking about—’cause, you know, she has built a five billion dollar business. Plus, I—and my shopping habits—can vouch for it too. Even though the Tory Burch look isn’t really my preferred style, I still find myself going out of my way to look for things to buy because I resonate with the brand’s identity. There’s the fact that I find Burch’s success motivational. Plus, I like how her designs center around her family and friends. What’s more, I love how she’s using her business to fund her foundation and empower women. (And last but definitely not least, let’s be honest - there’s also a little bit of wishful dreaming that some of her glamor and success will rub off on me when I wear her designs.) That’s the power of knowing, and owning, your identity. So, question for you today… Who are you? Really? When I think about this, here are some of my answers. I, Luisa Zhou, am… >> Proud of my roots: The eldest daughter of an immigrant, middle-class family, I was expected to work hard, go to a good school, and make $60K a year (if even) for the rest of my life. >> Often incredibly “unproductive”: In fact, if you pie-charted how I spent my time, TV would be an alarmingly large slice. As I like to say, I’m the poster girl for “working hard so you don’t have to work.” >> A (mostly) quiet rebel: As I’ve done for the past near-decade, and will continue doing for the rest of my life…I’ve built my business my way. I only take on clients I like, respect, and want to work with. And I’ll say and do what I believe to be right - no matter what’s “popular” or what that makes people say about me. >> Family first: Heck, that’s the only reason I was able to find the motivation to start my first online business—and overcome my huge fears of visibility, failure, the unknown, and lack of support—in the first place. If you’ve bought something from me before, I bet some (or a lot) of this resonates with you, and played a fair role in why you bought. And if you haven’t, but something about me resonates with you…I bet some of these are why you choose to be here. So, use this powerful business lesson as you will. (Or not, of course…always up to you.) And if you’re ready to learn more from me specifically, because you resonate with who I am?
