SEO News This Week Is Google finally making good on their site reputation abuse policy they threatened back in March of this year? Took them long enough. After Google’s forewarned two-month grace period (and then some), it looks like the hammer has finally come down. About a month back, [Glenn Gabe surfaced]( some Sistrix charts showing huge drops across several Forbes directories. [Sistrix charts]( But Forbes isn’t the only one to feel the heat. The latest victim? Fortune Recommends. The popular “product review” site has taken a massive visibility hit. In both cases, the drops are isolated to each company's subdirectories, so the lines drawn between the drop and reputation abuse are probably not far from the truth (particularly when you consider the next part). Back in mid-September, Lars Lofgren published a banger of an exposé on Forbes Marketplace. If you haven’t read it—[here’s a link](. A week later, Forbes subdirectories experienced a sharp decline in traffic. Speculation-smeculation… abuse is exposed, and Google acts (shame that it takes someone to call it out for something to actually happen). Some question whether these selective penalties are truly about site reputation abuse or just a PR play by Google. After all, if a small publisher engaged in similar tactics, they’d likely face a site-wide penalty, not just a slap on the wrist. Is Google playing favorites? I’ll leave that up to you to decide.
