Second Times, Uh, NOT the Charm? Last month, it was a search antitrust case. And this month? The DOJ (along with 17 state attorneys) is at it again, filing a second antitrust case against Google. This time, the trial focuses on Googleâs online advertising technology business, which generated $200B in revenue last year. The allegations? Google has allegedly - monopolized multiple digital advertising technology products,
- neutralized or eliminated competitors in the ad tech space,
- acted as âbuyer, seller, and auctioneer of digital display advertising,â creating an anti-competitive environment,
- and harmed online publishers, advertisers, and consumers. Yikes! Googleâs defense includes - arguing that the governmentâs case is based on an outdated view of the Internet,
- that advertisers have other advertising options, including social media platforms and streaming services,
- and that no one is forced to use its advertising technologies. Guilty? Not guilty? The case is ongoing, so I guess weâll have to wait and see how this thing shakes out. Want to keep up with the latest on this? [Jason Kint]( is an excellent follow. Heâs done some exhaustive reporting on Googleâs recent antitrust cases. âItâs a Googlequake!â Although the August core update finished rolling out on September 3rd, the SERPs are still super volatile. Semrush Sensor, Advanced Web Rankings, and SimilarWeb all show high volatility, particularly around the 6th, 10th, 14th, and 19th of this month. Naturally, because of this volatility, thereâs been a lot of chatter online about rankings. Many site owners and marketers are reporting fluctuations. Even high-profile cases like Retro Dodo are seeing their small HCU ârecoveriesâ take another dip. As Brandon from Retro Dodo recently described these fluctuations in [an X post]( âHelpful, to not helpful, to helpful, to not helpful... all in the space of a year.â See the volatility for yourself [here](. Googleâs AI Froths Informational Intent The folks over at seoClarity have just put out some research on Googleâs AI Overviews, and their findings are pretty dang interesting. They looked at over 1 million keywords and found that 96% of the links AIO displays in search results have information intent. And only 1.2% have purely transactional intent. AIO seems to be all about plagiarizing, uh, spinning, excuse me⦠providing âsummariesâ of content that's almost exclusively informational in nature. See a full breakdown of the results [here](. The Wayback Machine is SO Back, Baby I reported on this recently, but for those who missed it, The Wayback Machine (The Internet Archive) has been integrated directly into search results. To see older web page versions, just click the three dots next to a search result's URL > More About This Page > Wayback Machine link > and browse âtill your heartâs content. Read Chris Freelandâs, The Internet Archiveâs Director of Library Services, statement on the integration [here](. And boom! Weâre all done for another month. Till then, adios. Adam Steele
