School board to reduce some staff numbers, increase classified staff pay, as part of tentative budget plan
Despite uncertainty surrounding the states new school finance plan, the Lawrence school board moved ahead Monday on a portion of the districts tentative budget plan for the upcoming school year. Under the Legislatures new school finance plan, which awaits a decision from the Kansas Supreme Court later this summer regarding its constitutional adequacy, the Lawrence district would receive an estimated $74 million dollars in general fund money from the state. That number includes special education funds, and would represent an approximate $6.2 million bump from the 2016-2017 school year, according to estimates from the Kansas State Department of Education shared by the district.

School board won't bid school projects, will rely on construction managers to control costs
The Lawrence school districts 2017 bond projects moved one step closer to realization Monday as the school board voted to continue contract negotiations with two construction firms to oversee the renovations. Based in Kansas City, Mo., McCownGordon will supervise the bulk of construction, handling about $68 million in projects at Lawrence High School, Free State High School and the districts four middle schools. The Lawrence-based MarLan Construction will oversee $600,000 in renovations at the Lawrence College and Career Center.
