[👋 ](=) Hi! As the subject heading of this email boldly states… self-help can sometimes be harmful. Often staggeringly so. Why do I say this? Well, I’ve been part of the self-help scene for more than 15 years now, and I can safely say that some of the advice works - and some is just plain insufficient! To give you an example of the latter, I remember a friend of mine who decided he wanted to develop a six-pack. (Although he didn’t admit this, I think he wanted to impress the ladies). He read every available magazine article on the subject and also spent hours and hours watching YouTube videos - each that promised the ‘secret’ to killer abs. When I met him a few months after he’d told me about his goal, I was struck by his appearance. He complained that he had was frustrated by the slow progress he was making. I asked him what his daily exercise regime was, and he gave me an exasperated look and said: “I spend 90 minutes a day doing abs exercises!” Sure, his abs did look slightly better (as he was quick to show me), but the rest of his body looked flabby and lacked tone and muscle. Admittedly, he didn’t look all that different, even though he had been putting in over an hour per day of ab-work. Can you see what his problem was? He was so laser-focused on developing his abs, that he forget about the rest of his body--which includes diet, and other exercises to balance out his form and accelerate his progress. He was only focusing on a part--and ignoring the whole. To be honest, I don’t blame my friend. The real fault lies with the self-help guides that relentlessly focus on single topics, rather than looking holistically at issues. This leads readers and viewers of these guides to think they just need to put their time and effort into one area of life to be successful in all. Sadly, it’s a misguided approach. But hey - are you ready for some good news?
