A blend of 80% Syrah and 20% Grenache from Lesquerde and Saint Martin de Fenouillet (both in the northern part of the Roussillon), aged all in older barrels and concrete tanks, it boasts rockstar notes of ripe blackberry fruits, spice, dried garrigue, and hints of chocolate. Possessing a full-bodied, layered mouthfeel, sweet tannins, and sensational purity, its another one of those values that almost seems too good to be true. Drink it any time over the coming 3-4 years." (11/2018) K&L Notes: Jean-Marc Lafage has knocked it out of the park once again with this high-quality, low-cost stunner of a wine. Domaine Lafage is housed in their facility just outside the city of Perpignan. One of the most advanced wineries in the region, Jean-Marc and his wife Elaine are crafting "must buy" wines from the region of Roussillon. The Bastide Miraflors is a blend of Syrah and old-vine Grenache. The vineyards for this wine are practicing organic with an average vine age of 55 years. The last three years, this has been one of our ten best sellers of the year. We expect no less again. [keithmabry.gif]( Mabry]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: February 21, 2019 It might sound a bit hyperbolic to say but Jean-Marc Lafage is one of the best winemakers in the world. I can think of no one else who consistently delivers the cost to quality ratio that he does. From the Tesssellae, to the Saint-Roch wines, to this Bastide Miraflors, no foot goes out of place in the dance this winemaker does. Once again (and again and again), the Bastide Miraflors is one of those wines that must be tasted to be believed. This 2016 has a gorgeous nose, saturated with black and purple fruits erupting from the glass surrounded by elegant aromas of white pepper, lead pencil and cigar tobacco. On the palate, the acid, tannins and fruit are in a harmonious balance. How does he do it? First, it is access to this gorgeous fruit and second, his unerring eye for detail and that is what brings it all together. The 2016 is certainly a wine that will drink for several years to come, it is without a doubt an amazing glass now. As to top-winemaker status? I don't think there's any hyperbole - Jean-Marc is one of the best winemakers in the world. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2014 Liparita "V Block" Yountville Cabernet Sauvignon (Previously $60)]( [2014 Liparita "V Block" Yountville Cabernet Sauvignon (Previously $60)]( ($19.99) K&L Notes: The historic Liparita label traces its origin all the way back to the late 1800s. The founder, William Keyes, was an early pioneer in the history of California winemaking having been among the first to appellation designate a wine with his Howell Mountain Claret. Unfortunately, the combination of prohibition and then phylloxera took their toll on many wineries early on, including Liparita. The label was revived several times over the past century but it was Napa Valley grower Spencer Hoopes who finally resurrected the historic name in 2006 by bringing Liparita back to the luster of its glory days. He's been producing stylish appellation designated Cabernet's since. Anne Vawter began as the winemaker with the 2012 vintage. She credits much of her winemaking style to the years she worked with legendary winemaker Heidi Barrett while at Paradigm winery in Oakville. She holds a degree in viticulture and enology from UC Davis. "2014 is a voluptuous vintage. A well-balanced crop and easy going growing season gifted us by lengthening the 'just right' window of physiological maturity and peak flavors. This is a layered and refined expression of our Liparita Cabernet, still powerful, but with an active mid-palate and spacious freshness on the finish." - Winemaker Anne Vawter The fruit was sourced from prime vineyards in Yountville. The wine is a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, and 2% Petite Sirah aged for 21 months in 100% French oak of which 33% is new. [kajstromer.jpg]( Stromer]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: March 20, 2019 As K&L buyers our days are dedicated to ferreting out great buying opportunities. I would have to say that this is the most stunning wine buy Ive come across this year. Were able to offer a $60 wine at 65% off! This is a real unicorn. When I tasted the wine I was impressed by the aromatics, the fruit, the structure, and the long finish. In every way this is a classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon with all its wild dark berry fruit and palate coating dusty tannins. I visited the operation several years ago and Ive sold a few vintages in the past so I was aware of the wine's overall high quality. What I didnt realize was just how good this offer would be. It turns out that the winery was sitting on some back stock of this gem and that they were interested in moving itquickly. So they made us an offer we could not refuse. This reminds me of my early days as a budding wine enthusiast when I could buy the 1990 Caymus Cabernet for $20. Its like turning back the clock! --------------------------------------------------------------- [2017 Fromm Pinot Noir Marlborough]( [2017 Fromm Pinot Noir Marlborough]( ($24.99) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Made using organically grown fruit from five vineyards in the Southern Valleys, the 2017 Pinot Noir (this replaces the La Strada bottling) features black cherries and black raspberries on the nose. It's medium-bodied but a bit chunky and firm, with notes of dried spices and cola and a dry, savory finish. Give it another year to round into form, then drink it through 2026." (03/2019) K&L Notes: Fromm is a small organic and Biodynamic practicing estate in Renwick at the center of Marlborough's Wairau Valley. They have been producing wine since 1992 and strive to make hand-crafted wines that represent unique vineyard expressions. After visiting the property in 2011 we knew that these wines were special. We are delighted that we have developed such a great relationship with winemaker Hätsch Kalberer to offer these wines at fraction of their worth due to a direct winery purchase deal. I hope you enjoy the wines as much as we have. [Stefanie-Juelsgaard.jpg]( Juelsgaard]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: February 13, 2019 A true expression of Marlborough Pinot Noir, this vineyard blend from Fromm offers up some truly impressive fruit and has the aging potential to rival Burgundy. Showcasing the three sub-regions of Marlborough, from the rich clay soils of Brancott and the Waihopai Valleys to the alluvial gravel and silt of the Wairau Valley, this wine is not shy on flavor. Fromm does make their wines to age, so some time in bottle and aeration will reward the patient. Fromm's dedication to organic farming is reflected in the pure fruit flavors of the wine and the minimalistic winemaking techniques let the region's unique offerings shine through. Winemaker Hätsch Kalberer has been with the winery for more than 25 years and his expertise is resulting in wines of refinement, quality, and strength. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2014 Cristom "Estate" Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir (Elsewhere $50)]( [2014 Cristom "Estate" Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir (Elsewhere $50)]( Price: Hidden 95 points Vinous: "Bright red. Suave, smoke-accented aromas of raspberry preserves, pungent flowers, incense and cola, along with a hint of allspice in the background. Sappy and expansive on the palate, offering intense red berry, allspice and floral pastille flavors that are sharpened by a jolt of zesty acidity. Shows superb clarity and spicy bite on a long, penetrating finish shaped by silky, even tannins. The interplay of power and finesse here is really something. (JR)" (01/2018) 93 points Wine & Spirits: "Cristoms estate blend is firm and concentrated, laced with whole-cluster spice notes of rye, smoke, olive and caraway. The spice adorns dark fruit that practically bristles with potential energy, as if all the wind that passed over the estate is somehow stored in the bottle. Its lean and savory, umami all the way, with an inky depth that suggests great aging potential." (10/2017) [ryanwoodhouse.gif]( Woodhouse]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: July 30, 2018 An absolute knockout from Cristom! A rare bottling from them made possible by the exceptional quality of the 2014 vintage that has gone down as one of the best in recent history. This wine is composed of all estate fruit from Cristom's diverse patchwork of blocks in the Eola-Amity Hills. Fruit from these blocks typically goes into their top tier single block releases: Eileen, Jessie, Marjorie, and Louise. However in 2014 they chose to take some of those best barrels and make a wine that faithfully represented the entire estate in one wine; the result is this 2nd ever release of an "Estate" bottling that encompasses all their Pinot Noir blocks. The result is simply stunning. Crunchy forest berries, black cherry, hard ground spice, sandalwood, bramble, dark rose petals and forest floor. The wine has reams of whole cluster derived tannin and beautiful aromatic lift. It still feels youthfully compact and focused but its potential is unfurling by the day. I think it has at least a decade of beautiful drinking ahead of it. On a recent trip to the Willamette Valley I tasted several hundred top Pinot Noirs and this wine made my top three. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2014 Bodegas Muga "Selección Especial" Reserva Rioja]( ($44.99) 94 points James Suckling: "Fruit-focused red, with strong aromas of ripe blackberries, red plums and gently complex earthy and spicy notes. Theres energetic, ripe dark and red fruit on the palate. Silky and crisp with fine tannins, giving a velvety and chalky texture. Upbeat and succulent finish. Drink or hold. (JS)" (08/2018) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Muga family is a lot happier about 2014 than your average Riojano, and the 2014 Selección Especial shows why. Through a selection of the vineyards and longer aging in barrel, this is a more-polished wine, very good with food (it's the one winemaker Jorge Muga usually has when he drinks one of his wines with a meal). There is very good acidity here, which is why I think this is so good with food. I really see that vintages produced from the higher-altitude, cooler places in Rioja where the Muga family sources their grapes are different from other parts of Rioja, and this 2014 is one of the finest and most balanced of the recent vintages of Selección Especial. (LG)" (02/2018) 93 points Vinous: "(aged for 26 months in new and used French oak barrels) Bright violet color. Vibrant, spice- and mineral-tinged scents of fresh dark fruits and spicecake are complemented by a suave floral overtone. Juicy and pliant in the mouth, offering gently sweet black raspberry, cherry-cola, spicecake and rose pastille flavors that deepen steadily on the back half. In an energetic style, showing excellent clarity and silky tannins that frame an impressively long, focused finish. (JR)" (02/2019) 93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A wine that won't be released on the market until next year, the 2014 Muga Reserva Selección Especial checks in as a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha, 10% Graciano, 5% Manuelo. With an inky black color and loads of black fruits, charcoal, lead pencil, and espresso aromas and flavors, it's medium to full-bodied, has slightly more acidity than the 2012, as well as more tannin. It's a balanced, pure, beautiful expression of Rioja. Its going to benefit from short-term cellaring and keep for 15-20+ years. 93+" (03/2018) K&L Notes: A Blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, 7% Mazuelo and 3% Graciano. From terraces of tertiary chalky clay, from the hillsides of the Montes Obarenes and Sierra Cantabria ranges. Winemaking - Fermentation with indigenous yeast in oak vats. Aged for 28 months in casks made in our own coopers’ with selected oak. Before bottling the wine is fined with fresh egg white. Once inside the bottle it will undergo a process of rounding for a minimum of 12 months in our cellars. This wine has a black-cherry colour with a high robe and good density. On the nose it brings back reminders of ripe red-berry fruit, spices (pepper) and woodland herbs; the full spectrum of coffee aromas also makes a strong appearance: coffee toffees, roasted coffee, etc. with very well-integrated oaky aromas. In the mouth it is silky-smooth, with a presence of tannin revealing its youth and good cellaring potential. The tannin backbone gives it elegance and fine balance. from the winery --------------------------------------------------------------- [2016 Grand Napa Rutherford Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (Previously $135)]( [2016 Grand Napa Rutherford Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (Previously $135)]( Price: Hidden 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Deep garnet-black in color, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford has a nose of cassis, violets, cedar and camphor with chocolate and aniseed in the background. Medium to full-bodied and grainy, it is earthy in the mouth, finishing long and mineral laced. (LPB) 94+" (12/2018) 92 points James Suckling: "Dark-plum, blackberry and chocolate aromas with a subtly leafy edge on the nose. The palate delivers a bright, assertive impression with redder plums, raspberries and a fresh, zesty finish. Drink or hold." (11/2019) K&L Notes: Winemaker's Notes: "Aromas of blackberry, blue fruited, concentrated and everything you would expect from Rutherford Cabernet. Soft developed tannins. The Rutherford bench in Napa is home to some of the Valley ´s renowned Cabernet Sauvignons. The fruit was carefully fermented in open-top 1-ton fermenters. Skins were punched down by hand twice per day, 2.5 weeks on the skins. Aged two years in 60% new Seguin Moreau French oak barrels and 40% neutral (4+ years old) French oak." [ryanwoodhouse.gif]( Woodhouse]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: March 05, 2019 This is top notch, classic, Rutherford Cabernet for an absolute song! After being offered a parcel of these highly rated, yet under-the-radar, Grand Napa wines for a fraction of their SRP, we tasted very diligently on several occasions and time and time again I was just floored by the quality, power and balance the wines possessed. The Rutherford Cab starts out with an explosive nose of briary, blackcurrant fruit with tobacco leaf, cedar and that celebrated "Rutherford Dust" quality. The palate is luxurious and suave with lush fruit, very fine, polished tannins framed by classy high-end French oak. It's rich and powerful but not high-octane or jammy. Really concentrated and intense but refined at the same time. This combination of quality (first and foremost) plus press (94+WA) and discount (60+% off) doesn't come around very often. We're stocking our cellars with this beauty for the next decade plus. It might be that long before we see this type of deal again! --------------------------------------------------------------- [2016 Tenuta Sette Ponti "Oreno" Toscana]( [2016 Tenuta Sette Ponti "Oreno" Toscana]( ($74.99) 99 points James Suckling: "Gorgeous floral and deep, dark berry aromas with hints of spices such as cinnamon and hazelnuts. Full body and ultra-fine and strong tannins that are powerful yet so sleek and beautiful. Fantastic length and texture. Deep, dark and profound. Takes you on a long journey and shows you its true character. Better in 2025. Give it time." (05/2018) 94 points Vinous: "The 2016 Oreno is gorgeous. Rich, unctuous and resonant, the 2016 is laced with inky blue/purplish fruit, bittersweet chocolate, spice, lavender, licorice and incense. I would prefer to give the 2016 a few years to come into its own, but it is impressive, even in the early going. Silky tannins and dense, plush fruit add to its undeniable immediacy and sheer appeal. (AG)" (03/2019) [gregstclair.gif]( St. Clair]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: March 05, 2019 The nose is this wine is profound, I've had it several times now over the course of years but it has gone from an effusively if not ebullient fruity wine in its primary years to a more focused, savory and complex wine. The nose has layers of earth, spice and density and while it has lots of fruit underneath it doesn't smell new worldish. On the palate the wine has density, ultra fine tannins that show an exquisite balance between suppleness and muscle. The upfront Merlot gives texture to balance out the Cabernet Sauvignon's structure and the Petit Verdot with a bit of muscle and color. Long, long powerful finish a wine of tremendous aging potential, truly outstanding. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2009 Lascombes, Margaux]( [2009 Lascombes, Margaux]( ($94.99) 94 points James Suckling: "Aromas of black tea, blackberries, blueberries and coffee bean, follow through to a full body, with velvety tannins and a juicy finish. Lovely mouth feel. Very well done." (02/2012) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009, which is inky blue/purple to the rim, is a final blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot at 14% natural alcohol. The wine has a beautiful blueberry-scented nose with hints of acacia flowers, licorice, graphite and some subtle charcoal and background oak. Clearly a modern style of Margaux, it is pure, seamless, full-bodied and opulent, and the high glycerin and silky texture of 2009 are brilliantly displayed in this wine. Drink it over the next 15+ years, although it is certainly capable of lasting well past two decades. One of the more difficult estates to manage in southern Margaux is the 300 acres of Lascombes, subdivided into at least 40 to 50 separate plots, making harvest decisions, ripening, and related issues a strategic nightmare. Nevertheless, they seem to have hit pay dirt frequently over the last decade plus. (RP)" (12/2011) --------------------------------------------------------------- [1988 Fitte et Laterrade 30 Year Old "Domaine Le Chaou" Bas-Armagnac (750ml)]( [1988 Fitte et Laterrade 30 Year Old "Domaine Le Chaou" Bas-Armagnac (750ml)]( ($129.99) Fitte et Laterrade is one of a new breed of micro-bottler that's becoming more prominent in this complex region. The incredibly diverse producers of Armagnac across Gascogne have previously not had many options if and when they chose to commercialize their stocks. This small bottler came into existence thanks to a chance meeting between wine professional Vincent Laterrade and the Fitte family of Chateau de Herrebouc. Together they embarked on a journey through Gascogne to find the region's hidden jewels. They build relationships with tiny producers and offer them above-market rates for quality eau-de-vie with a promise to keep them unadulterated. The little cellar below Vincent's B&B is packed with "pieces" from various estates he works with, each hand selected for their quality and unique character. Of all the excellent Armagnac housed there, Domaine Le Chaou stood out as completely unique. This single-barrel-a-year producer only produced two vintages, but each is an example of an extreme style of Armagnac that doesn't often leave the tiny chai where they're produced. It's a style that the French have had trouble commercializing because it doesn't fit the notion of what many believe brandy "should be," but as a standalone spirit, few aged products match the depth and complexity of these wild, hand crafted eau-de-vie. Bold and brimming with tension, these Armagnacs are not built for the faint of heart. They're packed full of intensity just like the farmer who made them. [David-otheningirard.jpg]( Othenin-Girard]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: March 27, 2019 The wonderful brandy at Fitte & Laterrade represents some of the most interesting stocks available anywhere in Armagnac, but these two single casks that Vincent acquired from a small farm outside of Perquie were easily the most exciting and unique. This extremely well regarded village in the heart of Bas-Armagnac is home to the famous Chateau de Ravignan, one of La Landes most well regarded producers. But just the the south of Ravignan a small domaine produces tiny amounts of Armagnac for home consumption. The farmer specializes mostly in foie and beef production and doesn't produce Armagnac every year. Vincent told me that he'd stumbled upon the Domaine after a long day of tasting and bought these two barrels on the spot. When they were delivered to the chai a few weeks later he re-tasted and realized he must have been crazy. He wasn't sure he'd ever be able to sell them. This is just not what people trying to commercialize brandy in France are expecting. These single barrels were the entire production of the estate for that vintage and filled into new Gascogne oak without any manipulation whatsoever. It's a style that the locals love and you see people drinking out of shiners, but almost never makes it onto the market for fear that it will overpower those who might stumble upon it. The bottles open super tight and will taste world's better after a few weeks open, so I recommend pouring your first glass at least 1 hour before you plan to consume it. The color is pure mahogany. The nose is a huge bundle of roasted nuts, dried fruits, oloroso sherry, prune puree, mocha, fig jam, clove, cinnamon. Ultra thick and a bit hot on entry, it feels like it's going to go astringent, but backs off the edge with a dense sweet fruit, dark chocolate, burnt sugar and exotic wood. This is a big bold brandy that almost reminds me more of Kavalan or something in that intensity level than anything I've ever had from France. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2008 Dom Pérignon Brut Champagne]( [2008 Dom Pérignon Brut Champagne]( ($179.99) 98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2008 Dom Pérignon is the first time the estate has released a wine out of order (the 2009 was released before the 2008) but the estate loved the wine so much they felt it warranted additional aging. This is a rich, powerful wine that still shows incredible purity and elegance, with a stacked, concentrated feel on the palate. Its rare to find such a mix of ripe, pure, concentrated fruit paired with this level of purity, focus, and precision. This is a legendary Dom that surpasses all the great vintages of Dom I have experience with, including the 1990, 1996, and 2002." (12/2018) 98 points John Gilman: "The 2008 vintage of Dom Pérignon is an absolute classic in the making and this is destined to be one of the great recent years for this iconic cuvée. It is far more classically structured out of the blocks than the relatively generous 2009 version, offering up a deep, complex and very youthful bouquet of menthol, green apple, a touch of tangerine, a very complex base of minerality and notes of dried flowers in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with precise mousse, brisk acids and stunning length and grip on the primary and laser-like finish. This will demand some cellaring to start to really stir and should prove to be an extremely long-lived vintage of DP. Stellar juice." (07/2018) 98 points James Suckling: "The best Dom since 2002. A vintage with very restrained, powerful style that has been released non-sequentially after the 2009. This has a lighter stamp of highly curated, autolytic, toasty aromas than many recent releases. Instead, this delivers super fresh and intense aromas of lemons, grapefruit and blood-orange peel. Incredible freshness here. The palate has a very smoothly delivered, berry-pastry thread with light, sweet spices, stone fruit and fine citrus fruit. This really delivers. Drink now or hold." (09/2018) 98 points Vinous: "The 2008 Dom Pérignon is fabulous, but quite remarkably, it was even more open when I tasted it a year ago. Bright, focused and crystalline in its precision, the 2008 is going to need a number of years before it is at its best. Lemon peel, white flowers, mint and white pepper give the 2008 its chiseled, bright profile. Several recent bottles have all been magnificent. What I admire most about the 2008 is the way it shows all the focus, translucence and energy that is such a signature of the year, and yet it is also remarkably deep and vertical. In other words, the 2008 is a Champagne that plays in three dimensions. (AG) 98+" (07/2018) 96 points Wine Spectator: "Theres power to this graceful Champagne, with the vivid acidity swathed in a fine, creamy mousse and flavors of toasted brioche, kumquat, pastry cream, candied ginger and poached plum that dance across the palate. An underpinning of smoky mineral gains momentum on the lasting finish. Drink now through 2033. (AN)" (09/2018) 96 points Decanter: "Departing chef de caves Richard Geoffroy says that 2008 is his best DP vintage since 1990. The first half of the growing season was dull and sunless, but good weather returned in mid-September and led to one of the longest harvests, running into October. The summer provided ideal conditions for a classic, cool, maritime vintage of exceptional, subtle aromas with minerality and freshness. This has a vibrant but controlled acidity, and is above all a memorable symbiosis of mature fruit and salinity derived from top terroirs. The poised mouthfeel makes this a perfect gastronomic wine, strong enough for spicy Asian cuisine from the Pacific rim, but still compatible with classics such as roast turbot and lobster. (ME)" (06/2018) [gary.gif]( Westby]( | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: September 20, 2018 For me, this is the best young Dom Perignon I have ever tasted, better than the 2002, 1996 and even the 1990. We were treated to a preview bottle, and what a treat it was. I found the wine to have the classic Dom Perignon yeasty nose, but found it to be as transparent and pure in the mouth as their ethereal 2004. On the back end, the wine has concentration to spare, and blooming, chalky finish that seems to still be with me two days later as I type this. This wine is made from 95% grand cru fruit, with the balance of 5% coming from the historic 1er cru of Hautvillers, where the monk Dom Perignon worked and lived. As usual, this is very close to 50/50 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, although the powers that be do not like to discuss the cepage. --------------------------------------------------------------- There are now several K&L email lists, where wine enthusiasts like yourself can sign up for categories that interest you.
