It's not all apples and honey. Sunday Recipe Inspiration Batch 566 Sarah Jampel Test Kitchen Manager

It's not all apples and honey. [logo]( Sunday Recipe Inspiration Batch 566 [Pumpkin Challah]( Sarah Jampel Test Kitchen Manager Last year during the Jewish high holidays, we had just moved, and it was the first time that our Little Family was away from our Big Family in a long time. Needless to say, it was unsettling. No friends, no furniture, no bustling synagogue, and no festive meal around a crowded table. But one day I got home from work to find that our neighbors had dropped off a [honey cake](. And even though I had surely tasted many baked goods at work that day, there was something extra delicious about it. Even without an accompanying note, I knew through shared, silent language that it was meant as well wishes for the Jewish new year (and a welcome to the neighborhood). [Over on the King Arthur blog](, writer Lara Rabinovitch asked bakers representing a wide span of Jewish tradition what Rosh Hashanah smells and tastes like to them, and it's not all apples and honey, as ubiquitous (and beloved) as that combination may be. It's [sticky plum jam swirled into babka](. It's pops of pomegranate seeds on [rose water-scented pistachio cake](. It's [challah enriched with pumpkin]( (pictured above) for a golden color and soft texture. The recipes take inspiration from all parts of the world, from Ukraine to Iran to Morocco to Brooklyn. This season, as I continue searching for my own Rosh Hashanah rituals, I'm hoping to fold at least a couple of these into my celebrations, and I might even try my hand at a centerpiece-worthy six-strand braid using the [Braided Challah]( from the Big Book of Bread ([pre-order now!](). You can bet that no matter what I bake, I'll be delivering some treats to the neighbors. A sweet new year, Sarah This week at King Arthur Got challah down?
