The number of COVID-19 deaths also rivals those from some of the largest public health threats of the past. There have been more coronavirus deaths than the number of annual deaths from AIDS, which killed about 690,000 people worldwide last year. The coronavirus death toll is also approaching the 1.5 million global deaths of tuberculosis recorded each year.
