Takeaways from the GOP debate [For the best experience, read in browser.]( [Wake-Up Call] [by Katie Couric Media] November 9, 2023 Good morning. Today we’ll begin with [the highlights from last night’s GOP debate]( and critical moments from Ivanka Trump’s testimony. I’m also sharing [a can’t-miss conversation with Mary Trump and Adam Kinzinger]( about the impact of the insurrection. Then we’ll head to Hollywood with a major update on the actors' strike, plus [what’s next for The Golden Bachelor](. Let’s get started.   In the News [GOP presidential debate candidates on stage]( Getty Images This Time It's Personal Chris Christie, Nikki Haley, Ron DeSantis, Vivek Ramaswamy and Tim Scott duked it out in the third GOP presidential debate last night (Donald Trump, again, was a no-show). Here's [what they tussled over — and what they conspicuously ignored...]( A key focus: Foreign policy got far more air time than it has in previous debates. President Biden's support for Israel's war against Hamas left the candidates little to attack him over, though they broadly agreed he could do more to stop Iran from adding fuel to the fire. There was far more dissent over Russia's war in Ukraine, with Ramaswamy accusing the latter of harboring Nazism. Group amnesia? Despite resounding proof in Tuesday's elections that Democrats are winning on reproductive rights, candidates ignored the issue of abortion for the first 99 minutes of the debate. Once they got to it, Haley and Scott's positions were pretty similar to that of Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, whose GOP colleagues lost control of the state House this week. Close to home: Defending his use of TikTok (a platform the other candidates all denounced), Ramaswamy effectively called Haley a hypocrite, because her daughter uses it. Haley hit back “leave my daughter out of your voice,” slamming Ramaswamy as “scum.” We've got more on all this, [plus one very awkward moment onstage, here.]( [READ MORE]( PASS THIS STORY ALONG: mailto:?subject=Check%20out%20this%20story%20from%20Wake-Up%20Call%21&body=https%3A%2F%2Fkatiecouric.com%2Fnews%2Ftakeaways-from-the-third-gop-presidential-debate%2F   More Stories [Ivanka Trump leaves courtroom after testifying in Trump's fraud case]( Getty Images Taking the stand: Donald Trump’s $250 million civil fraud trial has become a family ordeal. His oldest daughter Ivanka remained calm as she testified on Wednesday, insisting that she had no idea why she was able to buy a penthouse apartment from her father's Park Avenue building for $12 million less than it was valued on his financial statement. The prosecution also delved into an email in which Ivanka suggested her father try to lower his net worth requirement to secure a loan from Deutsche Bank. The trial resumes today at 10 a.m. ET — and now, it's the Trump team's turn to mount its defense... SAG-AFTRA strike: Striking actors and Hollywood studios have tentatively agreed to a deal that would end one of the entertainment industry's longest-ever labor crises. It'll head to the union's national board on Friday for "review and consideration," after which more details will be released. Union president Fran Drescher called the bargain "historic," posting on Instagram: “We did it!!!! The Billion+ $ Deal! 3X the last contract! New ground was broke[n] everywhere!" Fresh competition: The FDA just approved a new weight loss drug, and it promises to be the most effective yet. Zepbound, which is made by Eli Lilly, will compete with Wegovy to transform the future of millions of Americans affected by obesity. Patients given the highest dose lost 18% of their body weight in trials — even more than the 15% lost on average by people who take Wegovy. Never too late: Tracy Chapman's classic Fast Car just won Song of the Year at the Country Music Awards — decades after its 1988 release. The song's had a revival thanks to a cover by Luke Combs which hit No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart this summer, making Chapman, its sole writer, the first Black woman ever to claim the top spot. "It’s truly an honor for my song to be newly recognized after 35 years of its debut. Wow," Chapman said in a statement.   Tune In [The cover art for ''Next Question with Katie Couric'']( iHeart The latest installment of Next Question is an episode political junkies can't miss.
