"The most important election of our lifetime." [For the best experience, read in browser.]( October 28, 2024 Good morning! We’ll start off on the campaign trail with: - [My interview with Gwen Walz]( on bridging the political divide - [The highlights from Michelle Obama’s first campaign appearance]( - Details on the endorsement drama that's tearing apart two prestigious newsrooms And if you’re stressed out about the election too, we’re sharing [what our editors use to relax]( — including [my red light therapy mask](. Take a deep breath, then let’s dive in.   In the News [Katie Couric and Gwen Walz]( Getty Images We all know Tim Walz as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate who gives off big midwestern dad energy.... and other members of his family have entered the spotlight since his VP nomination. [In my latest episode of Next Question](, I sat down with Tim's wife, and potentially America's next second lady, Gwen Walz. She discussed the importance of finding common ground with people who might not agree with you. "What I still see across this country is that we value the same things," she said, pointing to issues like housing and abortion rights. But she made it clear that does not include former President Trump and J.D. Vance: “I'm talking about real legitimate conversation… not bullying," she said. Walz also opened up about her fertility journey, weighed in on Trump’s attempts to win over women voters, and shared the advice she received from Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff and First Lady Jill Biden. A comedian called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage” and followed up with a slew of racist insults against Jews, Black people and others. One speaker called Kamala Harris "the Antichrist," and another said she had “pimp handlers.” Trump spoke for 78 minutes, and said his election would mark a “liberation day” from migrants. Gaza ceasefire talks have resumed, just as IDF troops withdraw from a siege of one of Gaza's last working hospitals. The IDF arrested at least 30 medical staff in what the WHO described as a "deplorable" attack. Meanwhile, one person is dead and dozens are injured after a truck rammed a bus near Tel Aviv on Sunday. The U.S. Navy has apologized for obliterating a tiny Alaskan village by shellfire 142 years ago. The attack left the Tlingit village in such a dire state that elders sacrificed their lives to spare food for the surviving children. In a ceremony on Saturday, Rear Adm. Mark Sucato said the Navy "recognizes the pain and suffering" it inflicted. McDonald's will resume selling Quarter Pounders in the next week after ruling out the patties as the source of the deadly E. coli outbreak that's led to 75 illnesses across 13 states. We’ve got [the key takeaways from Obama’s speech](, including her harsh rebuke of former President Trump, her impassioned plea to male voters, and her warning to anyone considering casting a protest ballot. [READ MORE](   Between the Lines The fallout at the Washington Post and L.A. Times continues after both publications suddenly broke precedent and declined to endorse a presidential candidate just days before the election. Nineteen Post columnists signed a letter calling the paper’s decision “a terrible mistake,” and former executive editor Marty Baron said it's "a betrayal of the core principles of the Post." Two Post columnists resigned as a result, as did three L.A. Times editorial board members. Both newspapers have faced a flurry of canceled subscriptions, despite their pleas that these funds support journalists.
