Hereâs the latest: Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer introduced the Right to IVF Act, a bill to protect access to in vitro fertilization, but it failed to get the 60 votes required to proceed. All but two Republicans, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, voted against the measure. The Supreme Court threw out a bid by anti-abortion groups and doctors to restrict access to the abortion pill mifepristone. The justices unanimously agreed that they didnât have the legal right to sue over the FDAâs approval of the drug and the agencyâs subsequent actions to make it more accessible nationwide. Medication abortion providers were relieved. Kiki Freedman, co-founder and CEO of Hey Jane, shared with us one silver lining of the case: âMore people are now aware that medication abortion is a safe, effective, discreet, and common option.â Julie Kay of the Abortion Coalition for Telemedicine cautioned advocates not to let their guard down. âThe upcoming elections are key to determining who has the power to regulate our healthcare â and either ensure everyone can access reproductive healthcare, or otherwise enable anti-abortion officials to continue to erode access,â she said.
