This legislation limited the number of crimes that require defendants to pay cash bail, so that working and middle class New Yorkers no longer have their lives upended due to being accused of a non‑violent crime. The COVID-19 pandemic even further revealed the importance of this legislation; because of bail reform, countless New Yorkers were able to avoid jail time at a time when our state’s jails were some of the worst hotspots for COVID‑19 infections. This legislation saved countless lives, and has been critical in making our state’s justice system more equitable. But since the moment these laws were passed, bad faith actors in both parties have been desperate to frame them as harmful, without any evidence supporting their arguments – and now the Governor is jumping on the bandwagon. Using people’s legitimate fears about crime as an excuse to push regressive policies that will not work is shameful, and will only hurt our state’s most vulnerable communities. Today, we rolled out our full public safety plan, because New Yorkers need to know that there’s a candidate in this race who will stand up for our state’s most vulnerable, not sell them out due to political pressure.
