It feels inevitable, honestly, given how I’ve been squinting at the corner of my garage, picturing a small bread oven tucked in there like it’s a wood-fired pizza fantasy. This year has been a wild ride, and the cherry on top? I've moved into this humble abode, or as I like to call it, The Big House. Thanksgiving is set to be the grand finale of a whirlwind of a year, ass my whole family makes the trek to Texas for the holiday. I'm busy whipping up Dad's favorite cornbread to freeze for his famous dressing, and turning the guest rooms into cozy retreats (aka, are there enough bedside tables?). I'm stepping up as the main ringmaster of our Thanksgiving circus this year. It feels like the torch has been passed to me. I've got big shsoes to fill, and a lot of family to feed but - it's my favorite thing. I just can't help but wonder - what sort of holiday ringmaster will I turn out to be? What will folks talk about in the car on their way home? Will there be enough mac and cheese? Will the indoor decorations survive outside? Ha! Creating a family tradition is no small feat, but it's really all about warmth, how people feel in your space, and if you made enough gravy, right? We dare not trust our wit for making our house pleasant to our friends, so we buy ice cream. I have the crust and filling prepped in my freezer for baking the Wednesday before the big day. Pro-tip: this pie is bests served chilled from the fridge.
