President Biden [struggled to communicate]( clearly in last night's presidential debate, sparking criticism from both sides of the political aisle. ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ [The Flyover] [Calendar] FRIDAY, JUNE 28, 2024 Good Morning! On this day in 1939, Pan Am launched [the first scheduled transatlantic passenger flight]( with the Boeing 314 Clipper, known as the Dixie Clipper, from Port Washington, New York, to Marseilles, France, with 22 passengers aboard. We had a spirited debate in the office about vacationing at the beach vs. a week in the mountains. Someone else chimed in that they enjoy camping in the wilderness. Let us know what type of vacation you prefer in today's poll. We hope you're enjoying each day's edition of The Flyover. Let us know how we're doing by replying to this email. [Take Off] [Article Icon 1]Biden Falters in CNN Debate President Biden [struggled to communicate]( clearly in last night's presidential debate, sparking criticism from both sides of the political aisle. Biden's voice was often quiet and raspy, and he stumbled over his words quite a few times—opening himself up to quips [like this]( from former President Trump: "I really don't know what he said at the end of that sentence; I don't think he does either." The two candidates sparred over the economy, border policy, and abortion ([and even golf](), but the substance of the debate was overshadowed by Biden's shaky performance. CNN's John King reported a "deep, a wide, and a very aggressive panic in the Democratic Party" after the debate, and [reports quickly circulated]( of key Democrats calling for Biden to drop out. In betting markets, Biden's odds of receiving the Democratic nomination [plummeted]( 15 points, and California Governor Gavin Newsom's odds rose considerably. The final debate is scheduled for September 10th on ABC News. [Article Icon 1]Supreme Court Rejects OxyContin Settlement The Supreme Court narrowly rejected a [nationwide settlement with OxyContin]( maker Purdue Pharma in a 5-4 vote on Thursday. The decision opens the door to lawsuits against the Sackler family, who own Purdue, but put billions of dollars in settlement money at risk. The deal, negotiated between state and local governments and victims, was [blocked by the court]( because it said the agreement unlawfully shielded the Sackler family from civil lawsuits related to the opioid epidemic. The settlement called for the Sacklers to contribute up to $6 billion for [opioid treatment and prevention]( in return for protection from lawsuits. The family said it would continue to pursue a negotiated settlement. [Article Icon 1] DOJ Arrests 200 for Healthcare Scams The Justice Department [charged nearly 200 doctors](, nurses, and others on Thursday in a nationwide crackdown on $2.7 billion in healthcare scams. [In one Arizona case](, $900 million in bogus claims were submitted to Medicare for wound grafts patients didn't need. Some elderly patients died the day they received the grafts or within days. The two-week operation also ensnared defendants accused of illegally distributing millions of pills of the stimulant Adderall, as well as other fraudulent schemes involving drug and alcohol abuse treatment that never happened. Authorities seized over $230 million in cash, luxury cars, and other assets from those charged. --------------------------------------------------------------- Want an edition of The Flyover that's just for the state of Florida?
