When I was little, a theme in some of my dreams was that I could control time. Now, thanks to movies like About Time and Click, I know that we likely shouldn’t be able to control time—we can’t be trusted with that, can we? But I admittedly still constantly think, “time is going by wayyyy too fast!” Slow it down. Stop my toddler from growing, she’s learning and changing at warp speed! How am I almost to my 3rd trimester of this pregnancy? Oops, the wall calendar is still on May?! Will I blink and be 40? What happens if I blink again? Here’s the hard, yet freeing truth: Life is short. In the grand scheme of things, it’s true! But it doesn’t have to FEEL short. Most of how we experience the ticking away of time is based on whether or not…. we’re paying attention. I’m really new to learning about how to turn this idea into a daily, honest practice (because that’s the whole point!), so I can’t list the 12 Perfect Ways to Pay More Attention & Make Your Life Longer. Heck, maybe they don’t exist. But I can say this. The less I worry, the more I enjoy. The more I enjoy, the more I can savor. The more I savor, the less nuances and details I miss. More flavor in every little bite of life. More awareness of what is IN those bites! More gratitude for the flavor. And gratitude has this knack for being so pleasant that you want to stay in it. The ‘moments’ get longer because you’re looking at the whole thing. Tunnel vision be damned! More memories stored of that meal. And the next one. And the next one! And your days become… memorable! Even when they are simple or quiet. They can all connect together in a fluid chain, rather than blips on a radar screen. Briefly there, then gone. Making the minutes more juicy, more scrumptious. Doesn’t that sound rad? I know when I first heard about it, or about the practice of “being more present,” it sounded so GOOD. I knew I wanted to learn how to do that! I was worried I was sucking at it even when I was trying. I knew I wanted to do less scrolling on IG and more checkin’ in with the rest of my senses. I knew my brain would be better for it! Like those long, summer days climbing around a treehouse with my siblings. Or swimming and splashing in the lake. Being more present sounds good, but, like me, I’m sure you need that ‘idea’ to become a practice. A real movement, a real method. Something with action, not just a nice idea. And action is usually accompanied by fear—in fact, [this podcast episode]( is one where I candidly talk about the five main reasons we feel fear and how to combat it so we can actually move forward. Whether you’re facing a shift in identity or feeling like an imposter, something tells me that fear can be a voice in your world. [Listen to this]( and feel a little less alone on the journey. Next time you’re attempting to be present, ask yourself to name 5 things you can see, smell, taste, hear, or feel. Name them, commit them to memory, notice them. (This is also an excellent hack for when you’re mid-workout and dying, to take your mind off of the pain, just sayin’!) We deserve to feel the length, width, and depth of the life we’re living. We really, really do. With that, let’s learn together. Let’s find ways to savor all the “meals” and moments that a day gives us. Heck, let’s make brand new ones!
