Morning Bites: 5 things to know for Monday, November 27, 2023 Duty-free threshold for overseas purchases to be doubled For Jamaicans importing personal items from overseas, the duty-free threshold will be[moved from US$50 to US$100]( during the next fiscal year that begins on April 1. The announcement was made Sunday by Finance Minister Dr Nigel Clarke as he addressed the 80th annual conference of the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) at the National Arena. He also announced that the government will increase to US$1,000 the threshold on which no tax is paid for overseas purchases by returning residents at the airport, which is currently US$500. Shineka Grayâs murder trial continues The trial of Gregory Roberts, the man accused of the 2017 murder of 15-year-old Green Pond High School student Shineka Gray, is set to [continue today in the St James Circuit Court](. High Court Justice Bertram Morrison is presiding over the trial at which the prosecution expects to call 18 witnesses. Gray's body was discovered in bushes in Irwin, St James, on February 1, 2017 with multiple stab wounds. Third trial of fishermen accused of killing three children The third trial of two St Catherine fishermen charged with the September 2004 murder of three children in Portmore in the parish, is set to get underway today in the Home Circuit Court. The trial was due to get underway in April 2021 but todayâs date was set after the defendants opted for a jury trial which was on hold at the time because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Rohan McCarthy and Ricardo Britton are charged with the murder of five-year-old twin boys Tyrique and Tyrone Henry and three-year-old Moesha. The children perished in a fire on September 14, 2004, which allegedly started after the accused threw Molotov cocktail or homemade bombs on their home.
