{NAME}, What was the last skill you tried to pick up? Maybe you got really into baking sourdough during the pandemic. Or maybe you decided that 2024 would be your year to start lifting weights. Or maybe you got interested in personal finance and [started to take control of your money](). Did you expect to be an expert at your new skill right away? My guess is no. Anyone whoâs been alive longer than 5 minutes knows that to get better at something, you have to practice. So why would you expect to INSTANTLY be a pro at living your Rich Life? Ramit working out I didnât go from scrawny college kid to this guy right away. I hired expert personal trainers, hit the gym, and put in the work. Allow yourself to be imperfect at the start Just like learning to ride a bike, bake a perfect puff pastry, or eat spicy food without crying, living your Rich Life takes practice. And you might just be bad at it for a while. Ramit's 60 days to Habanero Iâm always dreaming about teaching this class. Unfortunately, when humans are bad at something, we tend to react in three ways: - We avoid the thing. That seems hard, so I just wonât do it. La la la.
- We blame the thing itself. Thereâs something wrong with this canvas/kayak/ukulele!
- We blame ourselves. Why canât I just jump straight to being good at this?? Guess which of those three reactions helps you get better at actually doing the thing. NONE! Ramit Shocking. Instead of trying to become a perfect money manager right away, focus on starting to build the skills below. Allow yourself to be imperfect. Iâm not a therapist, but Iâm pretty sure this applies to everything else in your life too. Skills you need to build your Rich Life When I say âskills,â Iâm talking more about personal qualities. If youâre looking for practical personal finance habits, [check out my program Money Coaching]() â but itâll be hard to succeed at those without the skills below. Skill #1: Honesty You have to be honest with yourself to build your Rich Life. Because you canât change what youâre doing if you donât KNOW what youâre doing. Sometimes, examining your income and habits doesnât feel great. You canât explain your money behaviors, so you get frustrated. Or youâre [carrying deep fear and shame around money]() because of how you were raised, or something that happened in the past. (This is very common â youâre not alone!) Thatâs why the second skill you need to cultivate is courage. Ramit's post Skill #2: Courage I want you to embrace the courage to be uncomfortable â even if your financial situation makes you feel like youâre being slowly crushed in a hydraulic press. Crushed Try starting with one step at a time. If youâre prone to avoidance, aim to just log into your bank account and look at your balances. Just take that first step. If you feel overwhelmed by all the ways your money seems to slip away, then I recommend [filling out my Conscious Spending Plan](). This single-page worksheet is THE best way to see at a glance how much you make and owe, where you money is going, and where you want it to go. Skill #3: Flexibility I get it! Taking advice from someone else is nerve-wracking. Change is scary. But living your Rich Life will require you to be flexible. On my Netflix show, â[How to Get Rich](),â my guest Nathalie shared that she was spending a MINIMUM of $500,000/year on shopping. She told me she wanted to change â but sheâd fired 5 financial advisors before meeting me. The truth is that she didnât feel a need to change. On the show, I ended up letting Nathalie know I wouldnât be working with her anymore. But months after âHow to Get Richâ aired, I got curious. Had she curbed her spending at all? Iâll let you [watch the update to find out](). [IWT-Ramit and Natalie]() [Click here to watch this fascinating reunion with Nathalie]() Skill #4: Patience If you love get-rich-quick schemes, you might think patience = boring. News flash: A lot of effective financial practices are boring! Sometimes patience is the hardest thing, especially when youâve invested âlike you were supposed toâ for 25 years and only have a 3% return to show for it (thanks to your helpful [financial advisor]()). But getting impatient is MUCH more likely to lead you to risky decisions â like investing in crypto or, like [my podcast guests Brad and Sandra](), even backing a fracking operation. Depending on your definition of a Rich Life, building yours might take time. But you can take small steps TODAY to get going. It all starts with being honest. Imagine the relief and pride youâll feel, knowing you're moving toward the life you want. If youâre ready, my group coaching program, Money Coaching, is open.
