Researchers have studied this “social facilitation” effect for years. Social facilitation happens everywhere, from the gym (“Is he lifting heavier than me? I’ll add another 5-pound plate”) to live performances (“The audience is giving me energy”) to sitting down to co-work with a friend (“She’s focusing, so I will too”). There’s just something about being together that makes us try harder.
