But taking them has ended in disaster for many patients. An investigation by The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel found that more than a million “adverse events” have been reported since 2004. About half involved disability, hospitalization, permanent damage, or death. Some 34,000 patients died. The Journal Sentinel found that Humira and Enbrel (entanercept) were the biologics most often cited in in the FDA’s files. Humira is used to treat arthritis, plaque psoriasis, and Crohn’s disease. Enbrel is used to treat arthritis. There were 169,000 adverse events and 13,000 deaths linked to Humira. Enbrel racked up 135,000 adverse events and 8,000 deaths. The numbers are even more shocking considering that neither drug is among the 20 most prescribed medications in the U.S. Patients taking biologics are susceptible to tuberculosis, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. Just 26% of patients are properly screened for these diseases before taking the drugs. In recent years, the FDA has issued more than 25 new warnings and safety alerts concerning biologics. They have required the drugs to update their list of serious risks. These include warnings for fungal and bacterial infections, liver failure and heart failure, cancer, and flesh-eating bacteria. If you’re taking a biologic medication, make sure that you carefully read the package warnings. And make sure your doctor tests you for tuberculosis and hepatitis. TV ads make these drugs look like marvels of modern medicine. The reality is different… They are far more dangerous than drug companies would like you to believe.
