Unnerved. Intrigued. Worried. Curious. Unnerved by the implications that everyone with a phone now has access to the power to manipulate reality via pictures that, to quote the article, “are extraordinarily convincing, and … extremely f#@!ing fake.” (I bleeped the profanity.) Intrigued by how creative content and marketing folks might use this new power in the ongoing struggle to grab attention in ways that deepen rather than squander trust. Could you use a surprising, funny, or shocking manipulated photo to grab attention — and then tell a story about its creation, its point, its raison d’être that would deepen audience trust? Would you? Should you? Worried about what less transparent and less ethical uses of that power will do to people’s willingness to trust what they see (and hear — that’s why CMI discloses the use of AI voice “clones” of writers). As the article notes, manipulation of otherwise realistic photos isn’t new. (Neither is visual clickbait). But it’s never been so easy for so many people to do with such convincing results (e.g., no weird blurs, extra fingers, or misaligned body parts to tip people off).
