The gist: AI power needs are so great that “some worry whether there will be enough electricity to meet them from any source.” The article notes that to meet these power needs: - Microsoft is trying to solve atomic fusion - Other companies are exploring attaching small nuclear reactors to computing centers - The use of fossil fuel power (including coal) is increasing Yes, tech companies say they’re still committed to clean energy and that AI can contribute to solving power grid efficiency and finding climate change solutions. But, like everything having to do with sustainability, it’s complicated. Sure, searching Google, trading ideas with colleagues on Slack or Zoom, and writing a draft in Microsoft World all consume power. But, as the article notes, the International Energy Agency estimates that a ChatGPT-powered search takes nearly 10 times the electricity as a Google search. Does knowing this change your feelings about using generative AI for brainstorming or other tasks that have less power-hungry alternatives? Or are your feelings about gen AI complicated, too? (You certainly wouldn’t be alone, [according to new research]( No matter how you feel about it, there’s a decent chance you (or someone on your team) will have to answer audience questions about your organization’s stance on issues one day.
