There is a concern about “the level” of the performances. “We have to analyse that in depth and find some some solutions to address the issues we have. Over the next couple of days, we will spend a lot of time doing that.” The biggest is one that Southgate has long been aware of, in midfield. England have long lacked that central player, which is obvious. Adam Wharton is now being strongly considered. There’s a growing wonder whether Southgate can tactically solve it with personnel alone. England may have to think differently, as they did in 2018. The attack may have to win the ball higher up the pitch, but that is just one other problem that has been fostered by selection decisions. The forward line isn’t working in the manner it should. Southgate has a growing issue there, too. Put bluntly, there is so much to think about in the space of a few days, and that after eight years of build-up. There is also huge difference between finishing top and second in the group. First place means you’re on a side of draw where you wouldn’t meet another group winner until the semi-finals. A runners-up place almost certainly brings a last-16 game against Germany, and then a quarter-final against Spain. Grumbles grow around the squad England have let the families join up with the players after the game, which is a great idea when things are going well. When they’re not, it offers more complications, as there are more outlets for grumbles and leaks. Those sat in their area for the Denmark game spoke of considerable “tension” especially as some relatives began to openly speak about their feeling Southgate is too wedded to some senior players and isn’t picking those in form. It is something that could grow. More players have meanwhile started to talk about how it was a mistake not to bring Jack Grealish or Marcus Rashford. They were surprised when the calls were announced and are more amazed now. The feeling is Rashford would have been especially dangerous on the break in that Danish game, given that Ollie Watkins immediately got in behind. The England players themselves feel they collectively have the best attack in world football. That is not currently being shown. For Southgate’s part, he has talked to them about how the point is finding balance and having players coming on and doing damage at different stages. Neither is really evident at the moment, though. England badly need a performance to just quieten some of the grumbles. Pace and quality out wide puts Spain on centre stage Spain’s quality shouldn’t surprise anyone given the quality in the midfield and the fact they won the Nations League but the drastic rise in their level has enthralled people. They have gone from a potentially fine team that could have gone either way to maybe the most convincing team of the tournament so far. It is not just that they have confirmed top spot in their group before anyone or even that they have won both games with good performances. It’s that they have beaten both Croatia and Italy, and the latter could really have been 5-0. Gianluigi Donnarumma kept Italy in it. Other sides see one of the primary differences as the impact of Nico Williams and Yamine Lamal. Both offer an outlet that Spain have long missed, even in their glory years of 2008-12. That is really saying something. Through that, it was only really Jesus Navas, Jordi Alba and - to a lesser extent - David Villa that offered that pace, and the two former players didn’t always appear. Now, Williams and Lamal are on a different level of movement entirely, with that sheer speed complemented by high quality technique in a way that Navas, say, didn’t have. Williams absolutely destroyed Giovanni Di Lorenzo. In terms of coherence of tactical idea and expression of idea - not to mention pure entertaining football - Spain-Germany already looks like the pairing that should be the final. The pity is that, if everything goes as expected at the moment, they will meet in the quarter-finals. Tournament football isn’t that simple, of course. Teams can grow. Italy have long been the proof of that. France remain the team that everyone is ultimately concerned about. All of these sides right now have a level of play beyond England. New outlook at Old Trafford leaves a lot to discuss As Erik ten Hag himself revealed as a pundit on Dutch television, his new contract with Manchester United isn’t yet sorted. One of the main points of contention, as written in the Independent a week ago, is that the club want to alter some of his responsibilities. That specifically relates to recruitment, as INEOS are intent on overhauling how United go about that. Sir Jim Ratcliffe made that clear in an interview with Bloomberg this week, that did raise eyebrows in other areas. From being seen as an “establishment” club who were generally minded to preserve the status quo with Premier League regulations, their minority owner has started to talk about changing the financial rules. That could also be witnessed with United’s stance on the so-called “anchoring” rules where clubs can only spend a certain amount linked to the broadcasting money the lowest club receives. As regards Ten Hag, then, another issue still being negotiated is his staff. Uefa, for their part, have responded to some of the dysfunction around stadiums. It does depend on what ground you go to. As I write, I am on one to Leipzig delayed by over 20 minutes - which isn’t too bad considering the norm with Deutsche Bahn. Fabio Capello has actually just walked past me, on the same carriage. He is presumably doing what I am doing and is on his way to Netherlands-France. Last night’s England game actually started a run of seven games in seven days for me. While there had been the thinking to drop one to do other work or what have you, it’s hard to know which one. Everything has something going for it now, from Germany dazzling as the host nation to the events that Albania and Georgia games have become.
