What a fascinating week it’s been in musical theatre. We've had two big shows opening in the West End, each arriving on a wave of anticipation. The response has been deliciously mixed to both. Opening Night, an adaptation of John Cassavetes’ 1976 film from Belgian director Ivo van Hove has had raves and total pans. Our critic Alice Saville [landed somewhere in the middle](~/AAAHagA~/RgRn6kw2P0T5aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuaW5kZXBlbmRlbnQuY28udWsvYXJ0cy1lbnRlcnRhaW5tZW50L3RoZWF0cmUtZGFuY2UvcmV2aWV3cy9vcGVuaW5nLW5pZ2h0LXJldmlldy1zaGVyaWRhbi1zbWl0aC1iMjUxODcxNi5odG1sP2xpZD1sbDdlNG51ZGVjamcmdXRtX21lZGl1bT1lbWFpbCZ1dG1fc291cmNlPWJyYXplJnV0bV9jYW1wYWlnbj1JbmR5QXJ0cyBOZXdzbGV0dGVyIDMwLTAzLTI0JnV0bV90ZXJtPUlORF9DdWx0dXJlX05ld3NsZXR0ZXJfQ0RQVwVzcGNldUIKZgU2xwdmpG0S91IbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luOTBAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAAMj), loving Sheridan Smith’s raw performance as a leading lady on the path of self-destruction, really liking Rufus Wainwright’s emotional songs, but less sure about the production. A few things to look forward to… Ripley is coming to Netflix next week, with Andrew Scott playing Patricia Highsmith’s slippery anti-hero. Katie’s piece on the life and times of the mysterious author herself is brilliant – read it on the culture section tomorrow. And still to come, Carrie by Stephen King celebrates its 50th anniversary next week, so I’ve written about the bloody history of the audacious debut that started one of the most extraordinary careers in publishing. (It inspired one of the most extraordinary flops in Broadway history, too.) Choreographer Johan Inger can be heavy-handed about fate and destiny, but he’s always aware that people are making choices. ENB’s production is the UK premiere of Inger’s ballet, created for Madrid’s Compañía Nacional de Danza in 2015. His co-stars on Succession have, variously, described him as “frightening”, “scary”, “terrifying” and capable of flying into a “diabetic rage” (Cox is, to be fair, diabetic). Meanwhile, fans are hooked on his angry old-man act. Especially female fans, according to Cox’s wife, the actress Nicole Ansari (“Women are flocking”). Chutzpah comes with the territory. Last November, Cox sauntered onto Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night US talk show in a pair of faux leather trousers that were unbecomingly snug (when he sat down, the internet cringed). Undaunted, Cox skipped onto ITV’s Loose Women and heaped praise on his personal stylist. Yet there’s more to Cox than showbiz hoo-ha. A few months ago, I saw him in north London at The Moonwalkers, a show about the Apollo missions. Hands clasped behind his back, Cox was standing by himself, neither seeking nor hogging the limelight. Lost in thought, he was just a face in the crowd.
