INC. THIS MORNING First steps: finding a new normal Good morning, Chef Tanya Holland has long been a well-known presence in Oakland’s culinary scene. She hosted a Food Network TV show from 2000 to 2003, opened her restaurant Brown Sugar Kitchen in 2008, has authored multiple cookbooks, and competed on Bravo’s Top Chef in 2017. For all those accomplishments, she says, she still doesn’t have the same wealth and security as her white and male counterparts--which hit close to home when protests marched by Brown Sugar Kitchen’s doorstep. Holland spoke with Inc. about the challenges of being a black business owner in a city experiencing the one-two punch of a Covid-19 lockdown along with street protests and heightened police aggression following the killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor. Holland described a chaotic scene on her restaurant’s street this past weekend: Her own property was spared thanks to a “Black Owned” posted in the window, but the business next to hers “got annihilated with tagging.” “I felt more concerned for my entire community, which was being damaged,” Holland said. “I just didn’t like the chaos.” The experience, she said, has prompted community-wide conversations about how to move forward in a healthy and equitable way. Holland herself has a few ideas, including one concept that she hopes could become a prototype for what business looks like in the future.
