Why It Matters: The days of running apparel offering little more than utilitarian benefits are behind us. Sure, you only need a pair of sneakers to hit the pavement – running is a proletarian activity at its core – but a crop of indie running brands like Satisfy, District Vision and norda are fueling a new genre of performancewear, one that champions the “look good, perform good” mindset with fashion-forward garments and gear. Whereas brands once may have prioritized function with little regard for form, these brands approach that relationship with a careful balance of aesthetic sensibility and performance technology. Why It Matters: Ōtsuka Lotēc is an independent Japanese watch brand that has remained mostly under the radar even among some of Japan’s most avid and local collectors. Founded in 2008 by Jiro Katayama, a product designer turned self-taught watchmaker, where every piece is crafted and assembled by the founder himself in a small Tokyo atelier. The No. 6 reissue will soon be unveiled at the turn of the new year. Characterized by its analog meter that arrives in a fan-shaped, retrograde display, the watch’s face design is also reminiscent of an air pressure gauge. With the new release, Katayama is committed to retaining the original 40mm-wide model’s distinctive appearance, while tweaking the entire structure to fit a slimmer, 11.8mm-thick watch case. Why It Matters: We spent 2023 wandering the design fairs, exhibitions, and stores to find the best launches – bringing you a list that comprises a mix of collectible and more shoppable, consumer pieces. It’s not entirely clear why, but it seems as though 2023 was the year of the Great Sofa. Comfort was king, and designers have upped their game when crafting the living room centerpiece – so much so that it was difficult not to fill this entire list full of them, but we were able to hold ourselves back. Read on for our selection of the 20 best furniture, lighting and homeware launches of 2023.
