The latest from the HSUS. [The Humane Society of the United States]() [Your impact this month] [Two rabbits in a messy box]( [100+ rabbits in need given to rescue]( Our Animal Rescue Team responders entered the home of a man in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Not only was this man struggling with health problems, but he also had just admitted that he needed help for his rabbitsâthere were over a hundred of them. Thirty years ago, Mike had taken in his first rabbit at a time in his life when he was struggling with alcoholism. He said that it was that sense of responsibility for an animal that had helped to keep him sober: "They mean the world to me." Ever since then, he has shared his life and home with rabbits. But things became difficult. Mike has grown older and is struggling with his health. Unable to bring the rabbits to get spayed or neutered, the population of rabbits in his home grew out of control. As hard as it was, he recognized he needed support, so he contacted the McKamey Animal Center, which then requested our assistance. [He credits rabbits for saving his lifeâin return, by asking for help, he may very well have saved theirs.]( [A small puppy receiving care]( [15 'Horrible Hundred' puppy mills shut down or penalized so far this year]( Since we first started publishing our Horrible Hundred report on problem puppy mills in 2013, at least 2,500 animals have been rescued from these bad breeders, and more than 250 puppy mills from our reports have closed. [A dog being pet and licking a person's face.]( [How we protect outdoor dogs in Tennessee]( As winter tightened its grip on Tennessee earlier this year, an HSUS-led initiative brought warmth to pets and the hearts of their owners. Across the state, families in under-resourced areas received visits from local animal care centers and received insulated doghouses, all provided free of charge. [IA sad pig in a gestation crate]( [In insult to animals and customers, Target breaks its animal welfare promises]( Target recently announced that it would continue to sell eggs sourced from caged hens through 2025 and potentially beyond that, effectively breaking its promise on switching to cage-free eggs. And it still has not met its goal to eliminate gestation crates for pigs in its supply chain, a promise it made in 2012. [Two puppies behind a fence]( [The American Kennel Club is actively obstructing stronger protections for dogs]( The American Kennel Club's tagline is "For the love of all things dog." Nothing could be more misleading. Although it tries to pass itself off in the U.S. Congress and elsewhere as an authority on animal welfare, the organization is a breed registry for purebred dogs, one that has actively come to resist progress for animal welfare. [A white and brown dog]( [Our Auction for Animals closes tomorrow]( Get your bids in to our Auction for Animals, which closes TOMORROW, Sunday September 29 at midnight Eastern Time. Make your bids for prizes including a guitar signed by Taylor Swift, all while empowering our life-changing work for animals. Your support will help fuel our mission in the months to come, so letâs bid big for the animals on these great items! [The Water for Elephants Broadway show]( [Bringing our cause to Water for Elephants on Broadway]( Water for Elephants is remarkable, not least for its use of elaborate puppets in place of the wild animal characters, something the film adaptation sadly failed to do. This kind of innovation is what audiences should marvel at because it shows how animals can be central to a performance without actual animals being so badly taken advantage of for the sake of spectacle.
