Grilled cheese hack, V-Day picks, the moto jacket, Jocko Podcast, the world's hottest pepper, and more...
After some time off at the beach, The Rundown is back with another round of recommendations from Team Huckberry. Today, we’re joined by our longtime buddy John Zurbach, COO of [Taylor Stitch] (who, for the record, isn't nearly as serious as his picture below would suggest). TGIF, guys. Onward!
Favorite Huckberry Purchases: The [Astorflex Bitflex Chelsea Boot] has become my go-to pair of shoes. They're insanely comfortable and awesome for traveling (no laces). I've also been loving my [Aer Gym Duffel] - the separate compartment for my sneakers is especially clutch. I keep a pair of [Give'r 4 Season Gloves] in the back of my car at all times too - they're my go-to pair of gloves on the ski hill. Glad I got them in time for the insane amount of snowfall we've had in Tahoe this year.
Next Huckberry Purchase: Our brand new [Compact EDC Kit] - I've been needing a way to consolidate my keys, and I just lost my favorite multi-tool knife, so this one will check all the boxes. Also, I’ve never been much of a candle guy, but I have my eye on [Fury Bros] oil can candles.Â
Lifehack: [The Inside Out Grilled Cheese]. Just throw a little parmesan onto the outside of your grilled cheese 10 seconds before you take it off the stove, and flip it quickly on each side. Game changer.
Quote: “No man ever steps into the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.” - Heraclitus. Reminds me that any experience could change your life more than you might realize at the time - and moreover, to approach everything with an open mind.
Splurge Drink: [Montana Honey Moonshine]. It's the nectar of the gods.
Movie I've Watched 100 Times:  [Eastern Rises]. It’s got Bigfoot, grizzly bears, and badass soviet helicopters. Plus, fishing for massive, mouse-eating, Russian rainbow trout.Â
Recent Discovery: The [Carolina Reaper Pepper] is the hottest in the world. I learned that the hard way when I ate a tortilla chip dusted with it, and my mouth was still on fire after an hour and 4 glasses of milk.
New Discovery: Peeling garlic fast by [shaking the hell out of it].Â
Favorite Huckberry Purchase:Ă‚ I'm a huge fan of [EPICĂ‚ Bars] and always keep a couple in my bag on long hikes. And if you've never had [Duck Fat] fries, you haven't lived.
Next Huckberry Purchase: My last wallet bit the dust when I got sprayed by a skunk (long story), so I'm treating myself to a [Universal Zip Wallet] from [Tanner Goods].Â
Underrated Outdoor Travel Destination: Las Vegas. There are always great deals on airfare, and aside from Mt. Charleston's slopes, [Red Rock Canyon] is amazing for trail running, climbing, and camping—plus, if you have an [America The Beautiful Pass], it covers your entry fee.Â
Gifts I'm Giving for Valentine’s Day: My best friend Dana is a total badass that solo thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, so I'm sending her one of these [Woolrich PCT Blankets] and some [Bath Salts] to keep her warm and comfy in Coeur d'Alene when she's not out snowshoeing.
Gift I Want to Get for Valentine’s Day: I'm in love with a lot of the jewelry we've got in [The V-Day Shop], but I have to admit that when I saw the [Moon Dust], my curiosity was thoroughly piqued.
Podcast: [Reply All] has great stories about the crazy world of intrigue, commerce, and puzzling phenomena that surround the internet.
Lifehack: It seems ridiculous but I’ve moved over thirty times in my adult life, and taking a minimalist approach to my belongings—using a loose interpretation of the [KonMari Method]—has saved my sanity. Everything I own fits easily in my car.Â
TV: If you're into salt curing pork, a barter economy, and [fishing in a coracle], then [Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's] your guy. I recommend starting with [Escape to River Cottage].
Book: [Design for Real Life]. Not just for designers, and can really help you get a leg up on the competition.Ă‚
Favorite Huckberry Purchase: A shameless plug, but [The Maritime Shirt Jacket]. Overbuilt and classically styled, it’s one of my favorite pieces we make at [Taylor Stitch].
If I Had $500 to Spend on Huckberry: The walls of my apartment are barren. It would be great to spruce up the place with [some art] — [this print] in particular caught my eye.
Gift I’m Giving for Valentine’s Day: Heat on. Blankets everywhere. Doesn’t matter. My girlfriend is ALWAYS cold at my apartment. These [Glerups] might save the relationship.
Favorite App: [Audible] is the best $10 I spend each month. I’ve finished more books than I ever thought possible, and it’s transformed commutes and chores into borderline enjoyable experiences.
Most Insightful People I Follow on Twitter: Naval Ravikant [@naval](technologist, investor), Nassim Taleb [@nntaleb] (trader, statistician), Sam Harris [@samharrisorg] (author, neuroscientist) all regularly make me pause and completely reevaluate my views.
For Better Habits: Work out with a buddy. You’ll work harder and they’ll hold you accountable if you start to flake.
Quote:Ă‚ Warren Buffett on who influences him: "When I get up in the morning I look in the mirror, and at that point, everybody's had their say."
Podcast: [Jocko Podcast] — a former Navy SEAL Commander opines on leadership.
Netflix: [The Birth of Sake] documents the discipline, sacrifice, tradition, and camaraderie of sake brewers in the Ishikawa Prefecture.
New Year’s Resolution: Less alcohol. That said…
Cocktail of Choice: Manhattan.
Have a recommendation or two of your own? Drop us a line on Twitter ([@Huckberry]). If we share it in the next Rundown, we'll hook you up with $100 in Huckberry credit.
