I was a frustrated, overworked, and underpaid attorney—a Black woman in a white male dominated field—and felt suffocated by my financial situation. Deep down, I knew, “There’s gotta be a way to make more money and improve my life.” But most of the time, I was too worn out and distracted to actually figure out how to do it. At the end of a long day of work, all I wanted to do was change into my sweats and hibernate on the couch. I did not feel like a badass CEO—and I certainly wasn’t producing an income like one, either. Fast forward and today, I’m a self-made millionaire with a thriving business called Hello Seven, a non-profit that I founded to support Black moms and kids, and numerous real estate investments. I know you are thinking, “That is a pretty radical transformation!” You’re right. It is. How did this happen? How did I get from there to where I am now? I made a series of smart and courageous decisions—and one of the best decisions I made was hiring a business coach. Why did I hire a coach? Because within 3 months of launching my first business, I had enough self-awareness to recognize that I needed help. I knew, “I can achieve a lot on my own. But I’m going to achieve even more, faster, if I have a coach who’s by my side.” If you are wondering, “Should I become a business coach?” my advice is, “Yes. You should.” I don’t think there’s a single entrepreneur out there who would NOT benefit, in some way, from having a coach. And so we need more coaches out there doing work specifically for women, BIPOC, LGBTQIA, people with disabilities, and/or other historically excluded communities — provided by people who have lived experience across intersectional identities. Here’s why you need to consider becoming a coach. Coaching makes folks 95% more likely to succeed. According to a now-famous study from the American Society of Training & Development, having accountability is crucial if you want to achieve a big goal. Let’s say your goal is to start making $25k per month through your business, for starters, and eventually $50k. If you share your goal with another person (like a coach), and then meet weekly to give a progress report on what you accomplished (“Here’s what I did this week to move closer to my goal, and here’s what I didn’t do yet…”) then, research shows, you are 95% more likely to succeed. I like them odds! You could create a coaching program that includes weekly accountability—like an appointment or group session that happens every week. This makes all the difference. Coaching shows you possibilities that you didn’t know existed. Sometimes, a coach says one question—or statement—that changes the trajectory of your life. One conversation can show you money-making possibilities that you didn’t even know existed. My friend Alex hired a business coach more than a decade ago. At the time, Alex wanted to become a self-employed writer but didn’t know how to make money doing it. She had freelanced for a couple newspapers and magazines in the past, did a stint working in radio, and started a blog, but she didn’t have a clear plan for making money consistently. Her coach suggested, “You should really look into copywriting. Copywriters earn great money, there’s a huge demand for it, and you have all the skills to do it.” Alex had literally never considered copywriting before. She decided, “Okay, I will check this out.” Turns out, she had a knack for this craft. Within a few years, she was making multi-six-figures through her copywriting services and programs. It all started because her coach made one tiny suggestion which opened a whole new door. Coaching gets you out of your own way On the journey of entrepreneurship, you’re going to have a million fears and a billion excuses. “It’s not a good time to raise my prices.” “I’m an introvert, which means I am just not good at marketing.” “It’s so hard to make money especially in this economy.” “I don’t have any free time to focus on expanding my business.” A good coach will call you out on your bullsh*t. They will help you create solutions instead of creating more excuses. To become a good coach, you’ll need to get coached yourself. You don’t have time? Okay, let’s brainstorm 20 ways you can free up the time you need. You’re an introvert? Cool, let’s explore 10 marketing approaches that would work for your personality. There’s a recession? Let’s talk about how you’re going to become THE top service provider in your field and be in-demand no matter what is happening in the economy. As a business coach, you’ll be trained to think outside the box, which will help you realize that you have more options than you think. The questions you need to ask yourself: - Are you earning as much money as you want to earn? - Is your schedule what you’d like it to be? - Do you feel like a million bucks? Powerful, confident, unstoppable? - Are you enjoying the work that you are doing and are you feeling appreciated by your customers/clients/boss? - Are you running a seven figure company? - Do you have a million dollar net worth? If your answer is “no” to one (or several) of those questions, do yourself a favor and consider becoming a business coach yourself. Nobody climbs Mt. Millionaire alone. Everyone needs support. A coach should be one of the first people any entrepreneur adds to their squad. So consider becoming a Million Dollar Coach. The only thing you will wonder is, “Why didn’t I do this sooner?” -Rachel P.S.
