My brother's story. {NAME}, I want to tell you about my brother and his impact on my life. A few years after my parents had me, they decided to adopt my younger brother David. David was born 10 weeks premature and spent the first two years of his life in and out of hospitals. My parents received a medical bill over 100 pages long. If it werenât for my dadâs health insurance, we would have been in huge trouble. It was very scary and to be honest, infuriating. That fear and anger at our healthcare system came to a head for me a few years later. When I saw my hometown Republican Congressman vote to take healthcare away from people like my brother, I knew I had to do something about it. So I decided to run against that Republican. And I won. That feeling of having to actually do something to fix the system still drives me today. Our healthcare system is still leaving millions behind. Weâre supposed to be helping each other, and yet it constantly feels like our health, and our families, come last not first in our politics. Thatâs what Iâm trying to fix. As for David, heâs doing great. I even had the chance to speak at his graduation from Stan State. I wanted to share this so you know why I do this work.
