Austria Auction Company kicks off the second half of 2024 earlier than most auctioneers with its 24

[View this email in your browser]( Austria Auction Company kicks off the second half of 2024 earlier than most auctioneers with its 24 August 2024 auction, Collectors Rugs XIV - No Reserve, starting at 3 pm BST. The 306 lots on sale offer the eye-eagle collector plenty of opportunities to buy antique rugs and textiles at surprisingly reasonable estimates. While many lots comprise of multiple items, the second half of the sale has a large number of room-sized carpets including antique Turkmen including Ersari, Yomut and Tekke examples as well as Ushak and Heriz carpets of high quality. However, it is among the 19th century Caucasian carpets that the sale finds its most collectable and arguably important pieces. While a densely decorated Karachov Kazak rug, lot 160 (est. €4-6,000) and a Chondzoresk long rug, lot 162 (€3-,4000) immediately attract the eye, this Marasali prayer rug, lot 280 (€4-6,000) is the most appealing of the offering. The rich yellow ground provides a vibrant backdrop for a densely packed floral lattice that is cleverly drawn to create a V-shaped composition, which also carries an implied diamond medallion. The ‘grapes’, or birds, in the prayer arch, are well drawn and appear as an interesting elongated variation at the arch’s apex. [View the catalogue]( A current exhibition in Turin, ‘Tradu/izioni d’Eurasia’ tells the story of the journey of art, culture, traditions and language from East Asia to the Mediterranean basin—and back—via a selection of pottery, textiles, metalwork and manuscripts. Showing at MAO Museo d’Arte Orientale until 1 September, an accompanying [online booklet]( contains essays on cintamani, scale motifs, Sogdians and 16th–17th century Caucasian carpets (shown above), among other engaging topics. Now is the time to register for COVER Connect New York! The boutique show for leading high-end rug brands is returning to Manhattan next month from 14–16 September. Hosted by HALI's sister publication, COVER, the fourth edition of the show will host forty-four companies, like Kirkit Rugs (above), offering traditional and modern handmade rugs. Among the ten new names for 2024 are Bespoke Tibetan Carpets, Lila Valadan, Izza Berber, Momeni, S&H Rugs, Sergio Mannino Studio, Satar Carpet and Akhavan Farshtchi.
