The sale offers a treasure trove of different types of weavings for all budgets and collecting interests, including [lot]( above. This style of rug has been labelled Kis Ghiordes in recent times but in this case, that disminishes the closeness of its relationship with the small medallion Ushak or so-called Tintoretto carpets of the 16th century. The lazy lines, the green kilim ends, the medallion drawing and its internal decoration, the major border and the green spandrels all indicate an Ushak weaving. The deep green of the spandrels is noteworthy, and an indication of its quality, and while the minor outer border is typical of Ushak carpets, the addition of small red bird or leaf forms in the border is unusual. The Royal Tapestry Factory (Real Fábrica de Tapices) in Madrid has been in continuous operation since the 18th century. In March this year, it presented thirty-two new tapestries, commissioned by the Government of Saxony for the Imperial Palace in Dresden. The designs are based on an older set of Dresden palace tapestries that were lost in a fire caused by bombing during the Second World War. This was made possible by conducting exhaustive photographic documentation of a tapestry, at the Czartoryski Museum in Krakow, identical to those that had been lost.

Here we present some examples from the selection for [#RugFactFriday]( this week. The west Anatolian single-niche keyhole rug, ca. 1500-1550 (top right, left page) is unusual in featuring a single keyhole on a yellow ground. In addition, the âTalishâ style rosettes are drawn in an unusual manner, as are the hanging lampsâthe fact that there are three is uncommon. Another standout is the 16th-century central Anatolian Ladik carpet fragment (top, right page), featuring a wheel-like medallion design which appears on approximately eleven rugs that can be dated between 1500 and 1650, as well as appearing on 19th-century rugs from Bergama. Also included in the selection is a six-column niche rug from west Anatolia, ca. 1575â1625 (bottom, right page), which arguably has the most brilliant and clear colour of this group. Originally May Beattie characterised triple arched coupled-column rugs as being easily split into two groups: I and II. But in his new book on Transylvanian rugs to be published in May 2024, Stefano Ionescu elaborates on this with further categorisation. A painting in the Rijksmuseum with a similar type of rug was painted by Nicolaes van Gelder and can be dated to 1664. Read about the other seven examples in the selection in our new issue, HALI 219.
