[]Indiana Church's Historic "In God We Trust" Gold Coin Sells for $517,000
[1866 $20 With Motto, PR65 Cameo NGC. Gold CAC](
[1866 $20 With Motto, PR65 Cameo NGC. Gold CAC]( An Indiana church's rare 19th century gold coin featuring one of the earliest uses of the motto, In God We Trust, on a U.S. coin, was sold for $517,000 amid spirited bidding during a public auction Thursday night, April 27, as part of Heritage Auctions' [CSNS US Coin Auction](. The pre-auction estimate was $300,000.
"This is one of only 10 known surviving [1866 proof Liberty Head double eagles with the In God We Trust motto]( said Sarah Miller, Director of Numismatics at Heritage Auctions. "It was donated earlier this year to the GracePoint Church in Valparaiso, Indiana to help the congregation get its own church building. After our experts examined the coin, Heritage wired a $150,000 advance payment to the church so it would not miss a financial deadline for its building project."
The anonymous donor is a widow whose husband purchased the coin in 1993. She told church Pastor Ben Lamb the coin survived an attempted theft at her home four years ago.
The name of the winning bidder was not disclosed, but there was fierce competition between bidders in the room and online, increasing in $20,000 increments until the winner closed in on the $517,000 final bid. The winning bid was cast on HA Live!, Heritage Auctions' proprietary online bidding platform.
"According to United States Mint records, only 30 proof Liberty double eagles were struck in 1866. Today we can track only ten known surviving specimens, and three of them are part of permanent collections, including one in The Smithsonian Institution. The In God We Trust motto first appeared on U.S. coins in 1864, starting with copper two-cent denomination coins, and was used on $20 denomination gold coins starting in 1866," Miller said.
GracePoint congregation was founded in 2009 and has been conducting Sunday morning services in an elementary school in Valparaiso.
Pastor Ben, as he is referred to by his congregation, earlier stated: "This coin is an incredible gift in God's story. Although this gold piece brought grief to the widow for many years, ultimately it brought incredible joy. It's ironic that the last few hours before our financial deadline, the congregation had to do exactly what the coin's motto said over a hundred years ago: trust God."

[]Website Tips: Create a Wantlist from a Search
Our search page, and now MyWantlist, have special properties when you use a search term with the words OR, AND or NOT (caps used for emphasis only; they do not affect the search). Here is how they work:
OR: If you use a search term with the word OR, you are looking for anything that matches either the term on the left side of OR, or the term on the right side of OR. For example, a search for "This or That" (no quotes) returns everything with the term "This" as well as everything with the term "That". This is known to cause some problems when people use searches, and especially wantlists with a keyword like "MS68 or better". Instead of returning everything in MS68, MS69, and MS70, as the searcher clearly intends, this keyword will return everything with the term MS68, plus everything with the term "better". It completely ignores items in MS69 and MS70 unless they have one of the terms "MS68" or "Better" in the text being searched. Remember – computers do not speak English!
AND: If you use a search term with the word AND, you are looking for anything that matches both the term on the left side of AND and the term on the right side of AND. For example, a search for "This and That" (no quotes) returns only those items that match both the word "This" and the word "That". Incidentally, you will get exactly the same result if you use the term "This That" (no quotes) as if you use the term "This and That" (no quotes). AND is implied on all multi-keyword searches.
NOT: If you use a search term with the word NOT, you are looking for anything that matches the term on the left side of NOT, but does not match the term on the right side of NOT. For example, a search for "This not That" (no quotes) returns everything that matches "This", except for those items that also match "That".
You can get around these functions by enclosing your search term in quotes. For example, if you are looking for something that includes the exact phrase "This and That", use the search term (with quotes) "This and That". This is especially important when looking for movie titles, which are more likely to use one of the words.

Masterworks by Moran, Sandzén, Couse, Rockwell Highlight May 3 American Art Signature Auction
[Thomas Moran Grand Canyon]( Continuing in its reputation for offering outstanding examples from virtually every category of American Art, Heritage Auctions' [American Art Signature Auction]( May 3 will feature masterworks by trailblazers such as Thomas Moran, E. Irving Couse, Birger Sandzén and Norman Rockwell. Additionally, a significant selection of Early American Modernist works on paper from the collection of Dr. and Mrs. Henry and May Ann Gans will prove a true highlight for savvy collectors.
WESTERN ART
Leading the sale is [Thomas Moran's Mountain Lion in Grand Canyon (Lair of the Mountain Lion)]( (est. $600,000-800,000). Previously owned by distinguished Western Art collector William Thomas Gilcrease, the painting's impeccable provenance further underscores its importance within Moran's oeuvre. Although Gilcrease donated the majority of his collection to his eponymous museum in Tulsa, he kept Mountain Lion in Grand Canyon for himself, ultimately gifting it to his daughter, Des Cygne. The painting has remained in the family of Des Cygne's husband, the late Corwin D. Denney, a Gilcrease Museum board member and philanthropist in his own right.
"Once again, we have obtained a superb selection of American works from private sources, and we are thrilled to present fresh to market masterworks at various price points. Considered by many to be the premier painter of the American West, Thomas Moran captured the imagination of viewers at the turn of the century, and his works such as this helped inspire the creation of the National Park System,"said Aviva Lehmann, Heritage Auctions' Director of American Art.
Birger Sandzén's [Creek at Twilight](. $300,000-500,000) from 1927 is a large-scale example of the artist's painterly virtuoso. Exemplifying his hallmark Fauvist palette and bold, energized brushwork, this monumental example showcases the artist's ability to truly dazzle his viewer. Purchased in 1927 directly from the artist's trunk by the graduating class of Washington High School, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Creek at Twilight has remained in the school's possession to this day. Appearing at auction directly from the Washington High School Alumni Scholarship Foundation, proceeds from the sale will benefit the foundation's Continuing Education Scholarship Fund.
Creating a rare and special opportunity for collectors, Heritage Auctions is also offering the masterwork by[E. Irving Couse, The Pottery Connoisseur, circa 1930]( (est. $100,000-150,000) along with the actual Zia pot featured in this striking composition. The Pottery Connoisseur was purchased directly from Couse's son, Kibbey, in 1964 by famed Taos School collectors Veda and Ward Vickery.
[Norman Rockwell]( ART
[Study of Triple Self Portrait, 1960]( (est. $150,000-250,000) is a superbly painted preparatory work for what is certainly one of Norman's Rockwell's most iconic images. Here, the artist, with his back to the viewer and gripping his signature pipe, renders an idealized image of himself on canvas, providing an amusing contrast with his bespectacled reflection in the mirror. The final painting, in permanent collection of the Norman Rockwell Museum, electrified the cover of the Feb. 13, 1960 Saturday Evening Post, which debuted the first installment of Rockwell's memoir, My Adventures as an Illustrator . The present study, executed in oil on photographic paper, originally was gifted to Rockwell's friend, Henry Strawn.
MODERNISM
Heritage Auctions is thrilled to offer early Modernist works from the collection of Dr. and Mrs. Henry and May Ann Gans. Dr. Gans' involvement in medical research resulted in a study of the anatomy of the liver that served as a foundation for contemporary liver surgery, and in 1969 as an early liver transplant surgeon, he performed the first two clinical split-liver transplantations at New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical Center. While residing in New York City in the 1960s and 1970s, Dr. and Mrs. Gans became avid collectors of Early American Modernism and Abstract Expressionism. Highlights include [John Marin's Headed Down East,]( (est. $25,000-35,000), [Milton Avery's Bridle Path - Central Park West at 67th Street]( (est. $25,000-35,000) and [Joseph Stella's Elevated Railroad]( ($20,000-30,000). Proceeds from the sale of this marvelous group of works will go to support the research fellowship at the American College of Surgeons - foundation that is dear to the Gans' hearts.
