The [11-piece 1826 George IV Proof Set]( brought $282,000, smashing the previous record price for the set. Over 2,800 lots sold during the four-day, $6.38 million auction, with a 94.5 percent sell-through rate by value. The consigner was thrilled with the sale. "When I bought the set I knew that it was exceptional and thanks to Heritage, when I was ready to sell it, I was able to get the set into the hands of another admirer of rare Great Britain coins. I could never have imagined the astonishing, record price of $282,000 it realized at Heritage's auction in Chicago. A fantastic result all around!" The set sold was the first complete set of the type Heritage had ever offered. It. The set is also amongst the finest in existence. Every piece was NGC-certified and none were graded lower than PR62. The 1/2 Sovereign in the set was of particular interest. It displayed the sharp details of a perfect strike and deeply mirrored fields. It was graded PR67 Ultra Cameo, ranking it amongst the finest George IV Sovereigns in existence, let alone in a proof set. The set was sold with its original case of issue, a rare piece in itself. "The set sold marked just the third time in the past decade a set of the type was offered publicly anywhere in the world," said Cristiano Bierrenbach, Executive Vice President of International Numismatics at Heritage. "We are thrilled to deliver another world record result for a client." An outstanding [Claudius II AV Aureus]( led the ancient offerings. Claudius II, the "Roman Savior," is the emperor to whom most historians attribute the revival of the Roman Empire during the great struggle of the third century. Claudius was hailed as a hero of the nation for his success in battle but died just two years into his reign. Coins bearing his likeness, particularly of such quality, are exceedingly scarce. The coin, graded NGC MS 5/5 – 3/5, sold for $94,000. Coins of the British Empire filled out the top five lots. Another striking 19th Century proof set attracted six bidders and a selling price of $94,000. The [10-piece 1983 Victoria Gold & Silver Set]( was certified by NGC, with no coin grading lower than PR63 Cameo. The gold issues exhibited full mint luster, balancing with the silver pieces' vibrant toning. The set was also sold with its original case. While the [1684 Charles II Gold 5 Guineas]( is typically not scarce to the point of unattainability, it is in Mint State. Heritage sold one graded MS61 by PCGS, one of just two Mint State pieces known, for $82,250. It was the first time a Mint State 1684 5 Guineas had ever been offered publicly and a world record price. Rounding out the top five was an exceptional [1831 William IV Proof Crown]( graded PR64 Cameo by NGC. Its contrast between the satin details and mirrored fields defied its three centuries of history. It brought $51,700. [Back to Top](#top) []Indiana Church Strikes Gold With Early "In God We Trust" Rare Coin [1866 $20 With Motto, PR65 Cameo NGC. Gold CAC]( [1866 $20 With Motto, PR65 Cameo NGC. Gold CAC]( A valuable 19th century U.S. gold coin featuring one of the earliest uses of the motto, In God We Trust, will help an Indiana congregation fulfill its dreams of having its own church building and avoid missing a crucial financial deadline for the project. The coin survived an attempted theft at the donor's home four years ago, and recently was given to the GracePoint Church in Valparaiso, IN, where Pastor Ben Lamb described it as "an incredible gift in God's story." "This is one of only 10 known surviving [1866 proof Liberty Head double eagles with the In God We Trust motto]( said Sarah Miller, Director of Numismatics at Dallas-based Heritage Auctions' New York office ([www.HA.com](. "It is expected to sell for $300,000 or more in a public auction in the Chicago suburb of Schaumburg, Illinois and online, April 27, 2017. "According to United States Mint records, only 30 proof Liberty double eagles were struck in 1866. Today we can track only ten known surviving specimens, and three of them are part of permanent collections, including one in The Smithsonian Institution. The In God We Trust motto first appeared on U.S. coins in 1864, starting with copper two-cent denomination coins, and was used on $20 denomination gold coins starting in 1866," explained Miller. The donor, a widow who wishes to remain anonymous, gave the coin to the GracePoint Church in Valparaiso earlier this year as "seed money" for the congregation to construct its own church building. The congregation was founded in 2009 and has been conducting Sunday morning services in an elementary school. Pastor Ben, as he is referred to by his congregation, consigned the coin to Heritage to launch the church-building project. "The donor's husband was a quadriplegic for many years and used his time to study investing, including coin collecting. This was the very first one he ever purchased. He passed away 14 years ago, and she held onto the coin. Four years ago she was attacked at home by four assailants who wanted to steal the coin, but she and the coin were saved by a neighbor. She told me that after the attempted theft it had been a thorn in her side," explained Pastor Ben. "The widow told us the coin was rare, but we never dreamed how huge the true value was or the money it could ultimately bring for GracePoint Church. We were down to just a couple days to meet our financial deadline for our new building, and Heritage immediately wired GracePoint $150,000 (advance payment toward the final price realized at the auction). We were absolutely blown away! Honestly, we were completely stunned by the value of the coin," Pastor Ben stated. The coin was authenticated as genuine in 1992 and graded Proof 65 (on a scale of 1 to 70) by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation, one of the world's largest rare coin authentication companies. The back of the 1992 plastic holder has a scratch, but the pristine surface of the 1866 coin inside is unaffected. "This coin is an incredible gift in God's story. Although this gold piece brought grief to the widow for many years, ultimately it brought incredible joy," said Pastor Ben. "It's ironic that the last few hours before our financial deadline, the congregation had to do exactly what the coin's motto said over a hundred years ago: trust God." [Back to Top](#top) []Website Tips: Boolean Searches Our search page, and now MyWantlist, have special properties when you use a search term with the words OR, AND or NOT (caps used for emphasis only; they do not affect the search). Here is how they work: OR: If you use a search term with the word OR, you are looking for anything that matches either the term on the left side of OR, or the term on the right side of OR. For example, a search for "This or That" (no quotes) returns everything with the term "This" as well as everything with the term "That". This is known to cause some problems when people use searches, and especially wantlists with a keyword like "MS68 or better". Instead of returning everything in MS68, MS69, and MS70, as the searcher clearly intends, this keyword will return everything with the term MS68, plus everything with the term "better". It completely ignores items in MS69 and MS70 unless they have one of the terms "MS68" or "Better" in the text being searched. Remember – computers do not speak English! AND: If you use a search term with the word AND, you are looking for anything that matches both the term on the left side of AND and the term on the right side of AND. For example, a search for "This and That" (no quotes) returns only those items that match both the word "This" and the word "That". Incidentally, you will get exactly the same result if you use the term "This That" (no quotes) as if you use the term "This and That" (no quotes). AND is implied on all multi-keyword searches. NOT: If you use a search term with the word NOT, you are looking for anything that matches the term on the left side of NOT, but does not match the term on the right side of NOT. For example, a search for "This not That" (no quotes) returns everything that matches "This", except for those items that also match "That". You can get around these functions by enclosing your search term in quotes. For example, if you are looking for something that includes the exact phrase "This and That", use the search term (with quotes) "This and That". This is especially important when looking for movie titles, which are more likely to use one of the words.
