An [Extremely Rare Saber-Tooth Cat Skull - The Iconic American Fossil]( (estimate: $700,000-1,000,000) is one of fewer than 10 full skulls ever brought to auction. Excavated from the Rancho La Brea Formation, which has produced the most desirable among Saber-Tooth Cat fossils, the offered skull is a magnificent example of the fossil coveted by serious collectors. Fossils from the Rancho La Brea Formation, which has been closed to private collectors for nearly 50 years, are so rare in private collections that they rarely get brought to auction. This specimen is unmatched in its completeness and size, and rates high in both scientific integrity and desirability. Merriam & Stock records the largest Smilodon Fatalis skull in the Los Angeles County Museum collection at 324.7 millimeters from the anterior edge of the premaxilla to the end of the occipital condyles; the offered specimen measures 355.5 mm, making it one of the largest ever recorded. A [Rare Theropod Dinosaur Skull]( (estimate: $250,000-350,000) is an extraordinary specimen from an ancient riverbed in the renowned Morrison Formation's Bone Cabin Quarry in south central Wyoming. This largely complete and exceedingly rare Jurassic theropod is unquestionably of museum-worthy quality. This massive (60 inches long by 42 inches high by 23-1/2 inches wide) specimen is roughly 70 percent complete and includes 12 original teeth. Dinosaur skulls are extremely rare fossils, and a carnivorous dinosaur skull is even more uncommon. This skull is enormous and striking, an ideal centerpiece for wherever it ends up on display. A [Ferocious "Bulldog" Fossil Fish Skeleton]( (estimate: $200,000-300,000) is an impressive specimen from a species of large, aggressive bony fish with a thick-boned skull and a mouth full of sharp, piercing teeth. This fossil measures 15 feet, 10 inches, among the largest of a fish known to reach 18 feet in length. These aggressive fish, shaped like the modern tarpon, were distinguished by their heavy bony head and long, thick body, characteristics that are represented perfectly in this superb specimen from the chalk deposits in the Niobrara Formation in Kansas. A [Double Fossil Palm Frond]( (estimate: $80,000-120,000) from the Green River Formation in Wyoming is one of the more uncommon fossils found in the prolific Lagerstätte, but finding two in a natural association with immense size and dramatic visual appeal is a rarity that is in extremely high demand among collectors. The large offered plate features a pair of Fossil Palm Fronds in a unique orientation, similar to two interlocking gear wheels. The corner of the geometric rock houses a Priscacara fish, adding to the museum-worthy quality of the lot. Also from Wyoming's Green River Formation comes a [Superb Fossil Turtle Skeleton]( (estimate: $50,000-70,000), an absolute rarity that is exceptionally well-preserved in an exceptional layout, with the dorsal side exposed and with the full skeleton articulated with the skull, neck and three of its limbs extended. The large carapace (top shell) measures 16 inches across and is fully intact, with visible suture patterns and surface ornamentation; the bottom shell is presumed to be in the rock underneath the fossil. Some pelvic bones are visible near the tail, and a disarticulated group of bones from the right hind limb are exposed. Fossil turtles usually are found in shell fragments, making an exceptional complete and articulated specimen like the one offered here extremely scarce. We are interested in single lots and entire collections or interiors. Our upcoming [October 1 Design auction]( features rare American and European works, including a large collection from the Price Tower Arts Center, housed in Frank Lloyd Wright's only realized skyscraper, Bartlesville, OK. [Frank Lloyd Wright Slipper Chair from Martin House, Oak Park, Illinois, circa 1907]( From the collection of Price Tower Arts Center, this is an [example of Frank Lloyd Wright's early design style]( and was created for the William Martin House, a great example of Wright's early Prairie style of architecture. For this house, like many others, Wright conceived of the total living environment, and designed the furniture as well as the structure. This chair, featuring arts and crafts style craftsmanship, is thoughtfully designed to mimic the architectonic lines of the house itself. It's vertical and horizontal geometry is simple and pleasing. It is a well-crafted artifact from an important project of America's greatest architect. [Claude Lalanne Garden Bench from the DeWitt and Lila Archeson Wallace Garden at Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, 1984]( Claude Lalanne passed away earlier this year, and was known for the extensive body of work she created, alongside her husband Francis-Xavier, from their studio outside Paris, France. The couple had traditional art training, after which they began to create sculptures in a unique and fantastical style, inspired by nature, with Francois-Xavier favoring animals as inspiration, while Claude found focused on flora. Les Lalanne, as they were known, came to prominence in the 1960s, through prominent commissions from the likes of Yves Saint Laurent, Pierre Berge and Serge Gainsbourg. At the time of its creation, this patinated bronze bench was part of their largest American commission for the Dewitt and Lila Acheson Wallace Garden at Colonial Williamsburg. It was deaccessioned with a larger group of works around 2006, and has been in an important private collection. Over the last several years, the market for Les Lalanne work was increased, through demand by an increasingly passionate group of international tastemakers and collectors. [Harry Bertoia Untitled (Bush Form), circa 1968]( Bertoia]( was a prolific American artist and designer who studied at Cranbrook Academy of Art as one of the key figures in mid-century modern design alongside Florence Knoll, Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen. There, he began working in metal, making jewelry and print-making, ultimately selling 100 prints to the Guggenheim Museum, in New York, which encouraged the young student. After Cranbrook, he designed chairs with Charles Eames, and later moved to a farm in Barto, PA where he designed his iconic wire frame chairs for Knoll. In the early 1950s, he began making larger scale sculptural installations and tonal sounding sculptures he called "Sonambients"; alongside other forms such as the bush, dandelion or abstract "melted" forms. He is recognized as a pioneering artist of the postwar movement in America and his work is held in important public and private collections around the world. [Dale Chihuly Tiger Lily Seaform Pair, 2002]( Chihuly]( is widely considered American's most accomplished glass artist, with a long history exhibiting at museums and galleries around the world. Alongside his contemporaries, he pioneered the American studio glass movement in the 1960s and 70s, and took particular inspiration from the team approach to glassmaking he observed during his visit to the legendary Venini glass factory on Murano, the Venetian island where glass making has been a tradition for centuries. His is known for making colorful blown glass forms ranging in scale from small sets of vases and bowls to installations of monumental size. He has continued to promote advancement in glassmaking through the founding of the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, WA and his permanent installations in public spaces throughout the world. His work enjoys a wide appeal and consistently strong market supported by an international network of collectors and dealers. Superman had Luthor. And the Boy Commandos...well, they had Crazy Quilt. The cover of #33 above doesn't make the villain look particularly threatening since all he's doing is shining light on our heroes. But believe it or not this was the third time he appeared in essentially the same cover scene, following [#18]( and [#22](. And in his only cover before that, he [showed us how evil he was by...painting a chimney](. If you want to find out more, grab the copy of #33 included in this week's auction.
