Heritage Auctions' Coin Newsletter [Read this newsletter online]( [Heritage Auctions]( [Coin News]( In This Issue: • [September Long Beach auctions Exceed $30 million sold](#collector-a) • [Seldom Seen Selections: Unsurpassed 1853-D Quarter Eagle](#collector-b) • [Website Tips: Annual Auction Price History](#collector-c) • [Help Wanted: Heritage's Coin Sales Department is expanding](#collector-e) • [Around Heritage Auctions](#around-1) • [This Week's Top Ten](#top10) • [Is It Time To Sell?](#sell) • [Current Auctions](#current) September 10, 2019 [September Long Beach auctions Exceed $30 million sold] [1876-CC 20C MS64 PCGS. CAC. BF-NC-1, R.6]( [1876-CC 20C MS64 PCGS. CAC. BF-NC-1, R.6]( [1975 10C No S PR68 PCGS]( [1975 10C No S PR68 PCGS]( Two extremely rare coins from The Poulos Family Collection - a [1876-CC twenty cent piece]( and a [Proof 1975 dime without the S mintmark]( - sold for $456,000 each as Heritage's September 4-9 numismatic auctions at the Long Beach Coin and Collectibles Expo realized well over $30 million in total. All prices realized include a 20% Buyer's Premium. US coins raised close to $18.2 million, led by the aforementioned rarities. The 1876-CC twenty cent piece is a famous melt rarity, produced in some quantity at the fabled Nevada mint, yet almost the entire mintage was melted. Fewer than twenty examples are known today. The piece in this auction is a PCGS-graded MS64 example, formerly of the Battle Born collection. The 1975 No S dime is an extreme modern rarity, caused by the S mintmark being left off the die used to strike this proof coin in San Francisco. Only two proof 1975 dimes are known without the mintmark (circulation strikes without a mintmark were struck in Philadelphia and are very common). This piece is the finer of the two, grading PR68 according to PCGS. Other highlights from this auction included: - [Henry Hentsch Gold Ingot. 176.25 Ounces]( Sold for: $324,000 - [1889-CC $1 MS64 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS. This issue is believed to have had a mintage of only twenty or so examples, and it is considered a 20th century rarity as a proof issue. For collectors of US coinage, interest in this piece stems not only from the fact that it was struck in Philadelphia, but also that it was designed by Charles Barber, designer of so many US issues. This coin, graded Proof 62 Cameo by NGC, sold for $37,200. Additional highlights from among the world and ancient coin offerings in Long Beach included: - [LYDIAN KINGDOM. Croesus (561-546 BC). AV stater. NGC MS 4/5 - 4/5]( Sold for: $31,200 - [Roman Imperial: Avitus, Western Roman Empire (AD 455-456). AV solidus. NGC XF 5/5 - 3/5]( Sold for: $31,200 - [South Korea. Further US Currency highlights included: - [San Francisco, CA - $10 Original National Gold Bank Note Fr. 1143 The National Gold Bank & Trust Company Ch. # 1994 PMG Very Fine 25]( Sold for: $43,200 - [T15 $50 1861 PF-1 Cr. 79 PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.]( Sold for: $38,400 - [Fr. 9 $10 1861 Demand Note PMG Very Fine 25.]( Sold for: $36,000 [Palestine Palestine Currency Board 50 Pounds 30.9.1929 Pick 10b PMG Very Fine 30]( [Palestine Palestine Currency Board 50 Pounds 30.9.1929 Pick 10b PMG Very Fine 30]( The Long Beach World Currency Signature auction was responsible for nearly $1.9 million in sales, led by a very rare [Palestine Currency Board 50 Pounds 30.9.1929 Pick 10b graded Very Fine 30 by PMG](. Examples of this high denomination rarity have been graded a mere five times in total by PMG. This note changed hands in Long Beach for $78,000. Other highlights of the World Currency auction included: - [East African Currency Board, Mombasa 1000 Shillings or 50 Pounds 15.12.1921 Pick 18 PMG About Uncirculated 53]( Sold for: $72,000 - [East African Currency Board, Mombasa 200 Shillings or 10 Pounds 15.12.1921 Pick 17 PMG Choice Uncirculated 63]( Sold for: $63,000 Heritage's next numismatic signature auctions will open for bidding soon at [HA.com]( [Back to Top](#top) []Seldom Seen Selections: Unsurpassed 1853-D Quarter Eagle [1853-D Quarter Eagle, MS62]( [1853-D Quarter Eagle, MS62]( Scarce in all grades, the 1853 Dahlonega quarter eagle is rare in Mint State and unknown any finer than the MS62 level, assigned by NGC to a coin we will be offering in our [October 15-18 Dallas Signature auction](. The latest Doug Winter reference pegs the number of surviving pieces in all grades at 85 to 105 coins — a figure echoed by PCGS CoinFacts, which suggests that under 100 pieces are known. Just 3,179 pieces were struck, and the major grading services have assigned grades to 115 coins, a number which doubtlessly includes resubmissions. Heritage has sold MS62 examples of this date a mere three times — the last time in the January 2014 FUN auction, along with two examples in 2006. [This brassy-gold coin]( shows a minimum of marks for the grade, with a thin line of mint grease that passes through the right side of star 7 to Liberty's hair. Some flecks of deep-gray build-up surround the stars, while soft min luster glows from both sides. The obverse strike is unusually sharp at the stars, with the normal soft definition on the eagle's legs and talons as well as the curls below LIBER as is always the case for the 1853-D. Neither NGC nor PCGS report a finer submission. [Back to Top](#top) []Website Tips: Annual Auction Price History [View Prices Realized] We have added a new feature to give our bidders a historical perspective on the coin market. On the item page for all US coins, there is now a link to "Annual Auction Price History", found immediately below the Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions. This link will take you to a history of all sales, by year, of the item in the same grade and service. [Past Annual Auction Results for 1881-S $1 MS68 PCGS] Clicking on the Annual Auction Price History link will bring up an overlay that shows the number of sales, high sale price, low sale price, and average sale price by year. No attempt is made to differentiate plus or CAC grades; this covers coins in the same numerical grade from the same grading service regardless of plus or CAC status. Items with differing designations are not included, although you can click through to the Related Coins tabs to find the relevant information as you see fit. The collection features individual daily and Sunday strips by Jim Davis, the artist behind the most widely syndicated feature in the world, reaches two million readers daily. Davis created the strip in 1978. "Garfield is one of the most popular comic strips of all time, and has been for decades," said Jim Halperin, Co-Chairman of Heritage Auctions. "It has matured into a wildly successful franchise, evolving from the strip that has appeared in newspapers around the world to a television show, multiple movies and an empire of licensed products. Collectors who pursue these strips by Jim Davis see the opportunity to acquire an important part of comic art history." In November 2011, the iconic strip switched to digital production, so the ink on Bristol board Garfield originals offered by Heritage represent all that will ever be created. "I'm very excited about my exclusive relationship with Heritage Auctions," Davis said. "I've always taken my responsibility to the strip seriously (go figure), so it's gratifying to know that I'm reaching the 'serious' comic collectors with the help of the fine folks at Heritage." Bidding is now open and the auction closes Sunday, Sept. 1, on [HA.com](. Heritage Auctions' next [comics Signature auction]( is Nov. 21-23 in Dallas, Texas, and on [HA.com](. Owner/designer Dennis Smith used colonial Spanish coins from the "Nuevo Reino - or New Kingdom" such as this Mexican Escudo, and "treasure coins" found in sunken ships, as the centerpiece of a "Rarity Necklace". This finely detailed Escudo is surrounded by a halo of diamonds, and further decorated with emeralds, the prevalent jewel of South America. To complete this centerpiece is a bold, hand forged curb link chain, with hammer strikes visible throughout. A unique piece looking for a unique owner!
