[Tales to Astonish #19 (Atlas, 1961) CGC FN/VF 7.0 Off-white to white pages]( The highest-graded monster mag offered this week is Tales to Astonish #19. 108 of the 163 monster comics Marvel published are in [this week's auction]( Included are all 33 "monster" issues of [Journey into Mystery]( (50-82) and all but one of the 34 "monster issues" of Strange Tales (67-100). Also included are very nice selections of [Tales to Astonish]( and [Strange Worlds](. [Back to Top](#top) []...And By the Way, What Was The First Marvel Monster Comic? By [Barry Sandoval](mailto:BarryS@HA.com), Heritage Auctions I once read that the first monster comic published by Marvel is a tie between [Strange Worlds #1]( and [World of Fantasy #15]( (both December 1958). Sorry, I am going to destroy that idea faster than Googam can destroy a cityscape. The World of Fantasy issue has no monster content of any sort inside or out, and the closest the first Strange Worlds can come is a flying saucer with legs. (We have both of these comics in the current weekly auction, though the one to get is Strange Worlds for the killer Kirby and Ditko stories.) [Strange Worlds #1 and 5 Group (Marvel, 1958-59) Condition: Average GD]( [World of Fantasy #15 and 17 Group (Atlas, 1958-59)]( Our next candidate for the first monster comic is the following month's Tales to Astonish #1 (January 1959). That does have a monster of sorts, but a giant turtle is not going to make anyone forget Fin Fang Foom. [Tales to Astonish #1] Fast forward another three months: April 1959 brought Strange Worlds #3 and the Creature from Planet X. He's a monster, but his name is neither interesting nor lettered in a very large size. [Strange Worlds #3 (Marvel, 1959) Condition: VG]( June 1959 brought us Xom (World of Fantasy #18). Larger letters now, but his name is pretty standard science fiction fare and not particularly goofy. Ditto for Monstro and Zog, who made their debuts in the following few months. [Xom World of Fantasy #18] Then in February 1960 it all came together in Strange Tales #73. The character is huge on the cover and has a goofy name (Grottu) written in huge letters, with a couple of fleeing civilians repeating the name for good measure. So for this writer, the first "true" Marvel monster comic is Strange Tales #73. [Strange Tales #73 (Marvel, 1960) Condition: FN]( As for the last "true" Marvel monster comic? I would put it at a tie between Pildorr and Oog, from Strange Tales #94 and Tales of Suspense #27 respectively, both cover-dated March 1962. [Strange Worlds #1 and 5 Group (Marvel, 1958-59) Condition: Average GD] [World of Fantasy #15 and 17 Group (Atlas, 1958-59)] Yes, the heyday of the monsters lasted just over two years. But the good news is you could fit every "true" Marvel monster comic into one shortbox, so it's a collecting challenge that's not out of reach. [Back to Top](#top) []Around Heritage Auctions Private Collection of Prominent Collector, Writer Featured in Heritage Auctions' September Wine Auction [2019 September 20 - 21 Wine Signature Auction - Beverly Hills #5437]( Mark Golodetz, a leading wine collector and writer for more than three decades, is offering 6,000 bottles from his personal cellar to collectors in Heritage Auctions' [Wine Auction]( Sept. 20-21 in Beverly Hills, California. The event will be Heritage's largest multi-consignor auction ever presented, with more than 1,900 lots, with a low estimate for the sale at nearly $3 million. Golodetz has been writing about wine and collecting for more than 30 years. A contributing editor and European correspondent for Wine Enthusiast magazine, he also has written for Bloomberg, World of Fine Wines and Art and Auction. "The wines we're offering would be described as from an eclectic cellar," Golodetz said. "It features a strong selection of Bordeaux from the 1950s and '60s and '70s, and a lot of excellent Burgundy. There are plenty of choices for trophy collectors, but it also features some outstanding selections from 1962, which was an amazing vintage nobody pays much attention to." "This collection covers a really wide range," Heritage Auctions Senior Fine and Rare Wine Director Frank Martell said. "The Mark Golodetz collection is an absolute treasure trove for trophy hunters, collectors, drinkers and academics alike." In addition to the Friday evening Signature selection of Golodetz' wines, there is a large and varied Non-Floor Session that will stream online offered in the back of the catalog, offering incredible bidding opportunities for buyers. Several other important collections are featured in this auction, including a New World Cache from a repeat consignor and a large selection of rare Burgundy and California wines from a West Coast cellar. The auction includes numerous lots from private American collections. "This is a good auction with a wide variety of privately sourced materials from many periods in Chinese history," Heritage Auctions Asian Art Director Richard Cervantes said. "The range of artwork here represented will capture the interest and satisfy collectors of Asian Art in virtually every category." A [Chinese Imperial Cloisonné Enamel and Cabochon-Mounted Gilt Bronze Elephant Censer, Qing Dynasty, Qianlong Period]( $50,000-70,000) comes from a prominent Southern California family of discerning art collectors. The family has owned it for roughly half a century, since acquiring it during the 1960s. Of note are the elephant-form legs and the large elephant finial on the cover, a motif that exemplifies the imperial style of the 18th century. A [Large Chinese Gilt Lacquered Bronze Figure of Guanyin, late Ming Dynasty]( (estimate: $40,000-60,000) is an excellent example of such figures the period. The lacquer is exceptionally well-preserved, and the sheer size of the figure - it stands 21 inches tall - gives it exceptional presence, towering over similar figures often cast to a smaller scale. A [Chinese Jun Ware Jar, Yuan Dynasty]( (estimate: $25,000-45,000) is an example of the Jun stoneware from the late Chinese middle ages that was prized for its robin blue color and royal purple splashes caused by glaze transmutation. Jun ware was difficult to fire and most that has been found has been small bowls and plates. Jun ware of this size was exceedingly rare. An [Imperial Chinese Carved Three-Color Lacquer Nine Dragons Box and Cover, Qing Dynasty, Qianlong Period]( (estimate: $20,000-40,000) is the type of box that was used to present gifts of significant value or importance in the Chinese Imperial court. Such gift boxes are now appreciated as much as the gifts they contained, and with good reason, as the workmanship that went into creating such boxes was extraordinary. The lacquer was carefully applied in thin layers. Several base layers were applied and then other layer of a different color would be added, followed by more lacquer, in a process that could be repeated multiple times. Once the desired number of layers of color and lacquer were applied, ornate designs were carved into the box, ultimately revealing intricate multi-color artwork, depending on the depth of the carving. In this case, the spaces carved into the red surface reveal brown and grey/black layers underneath. A [Fine Mughal-Inspired Chinese Carved Celadon Jade Ewer, late Ming Dynasty]( (estimate: $15,000-20,000) is made in the style of the royal court of Northern India's Mughal Empire. The Chinese imperial court and other elites in Chinese society favored decorative arts in the Islamic style. The artists who made this ewer painstakingly carved it from a solid piece of jade, forming the slender walls in an ornate pattern emblematic of the Mughal style but also incorporating repeating "Shou" characters bestowing a wish for long life.
