Kuang-hsü Dollar (7 Mace 3 Candareens) ND (1889) MS64+ NGC]( [Kwangtung. Kuang-hsü Dollar (7 Mace 3 Candareens) ND (1889) MS64+ NGC]( Rare Chinese coinage led the way as Heritage's June 26-28 Signature Auctions in Hong Kong realized in excess of $5.7 million overall. Auctions of both World Currency and World and Ancient Coins were held in conjunction with the Hong Kong International Numismatic Fair. All prices realized include a 20% Buyer's Premium. The [auction of World and Ancient coins]( raised over $3.1 million overall, led by [the finest Undated (1889) Kwangtung Dragon Dollar to be certified in a Mint State grade](. Graded MS64+ by NGC, and with the denomination expressed as 7 MACE AND 3 CANDAREENS, this coin represents the finest of this heavily melted and now very rare issue. It sold for $228,000. An example of the [Year 3 (1914) L. Giorgi Pattern Dollar, graded MS61 by NGC]( represents an iconic issue in a near-universally recognized type, with the L. Giorgi signature above the shoulder making this piece a truly iconic rarity, thus explaining the realized sale price of $132,000. A few of the additional highlights among the coins offered in this auction included: - [Kuang-hsü gold Pattern Kuping Tael (Liang) CD 1907 MS61 NGC, Tientsin mint, KM-Pn302]( Sold for: $114,000 - [People's Republic gold Proof "Ancient Dragon Boat" 500 Yuan (5 oz) 1995 PR69 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM-A823, Fr-124]( Sold for: $108,000 - [Kwangtung. Kuang-hsü 50 Cents (3 Mace 6-1/2 Candareens) ND (1889) MS65+ NGC, Kwangtung mint, KM-Y197]( Sold for: $90,000 - [People's Republic gold Proof Peacock 500 Yuan (5 oz) 1993 PR69 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM600]( Sold for: $66,000 [World Currency offerings in Hong Kong]( brought outstanding prices, totaling over $2.6 million overall. The top note was an important unissued Proof design of the [1965 People's Bank of China 10 Yuan, graded Choice Uncirculated 63 by PMG](. The design of this note is subtly but critically different than the issued 10 Yuan note, and it is likely that this design was proposed for circulation, but quickly discarded in favor of the issued vignette. This rare proof sold for $120,000. [China People's Bank of China 10 Yuan 1965 Pick 879pp Progressive Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 63]( [China People's Bank of China 10 Yuan 1965 Pick 879pp Progressive Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 63]( Among the other highlights of this auction were lots like: - [American Bank Note Company Display of Rare and Scarce Proofs from the Early Ta-Ching Government Bank and Bank of China Issues]( Sold for: $75,000 - [Deutsch-Asiatische Bank, Peking 100 Dollars 1.7.1914 Pick S277r S/M#T101-24 Remainder PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ]( Sold for: $66,000 - [Central Bank of China 1 Yuan 1936 Pick 209 PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ]( Sold for: $55,200 - [Hong Kong: Mercantile Bank of India, Ltd. 50 Dollars ND (1912-30) Pick 238cts KNB14 Color Trial Specimen PMG About Uncirculated 53]( Sold for: $54,000 - [Deutsch-Asiatische Bank, Hankow 5 Dollars 1.3.1907 Pick S262s S/M#T101-2a Specimen PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ]( Sold for: $50,400 Our next auction of World and Ancient coins is scheduled for August 15 at the ANA World's Fair of Money in Chicago. Central America #2 (with Pinch) MS61 PCGS]( [1857-S $3 S.S. Central America #2 (with Pinch) MS61 PCGS]( [1857-S $3 S.S. Central America #2 (with Pinch) MS61 PCGS]( [1857-S $3 S.S. Central America #2 (with Pinch) MS61 PCGS]( Although recoveries from the S.S. Central America more than doubled the number of Mint State 1857-S threes known, just 11 pieces are currently shown in Uncirculated grades by PCGS and NGC combined. This [PCGS-graded MS61 coin]( we are offering in our [July 11-14 Summer FUN Signature Auction]( is one of only eight Mint State pieces certified by PCGS. Just 14,200 pieces were struck, nearly all of which were released into circulation and used extensively in West Coast trade. This yellow-gold example retains most of its original semireflective surface on the obverse, while the reverse is lightly frosted across its smooth fields. Both sides show light, hair-thin abrasions and a few tiny marks. A sharp strike weakens only at the highest points of Liberty's curls, and bright mint luster shines throughout the obverse and reverse. A pinch of gold dust recovered from the shipwreck occupies one of the dual holder windows, while the back of the holder has the signature of chief scientist and historian of the shipwreck treasure, Bob Evans, confirming recovery of the gold dust and coin from the S.S. Central America. Its box of issue is included. [Back to Top](#top) []Heritage Auctions To Split Online Bidding Increments Heritage Auctions has announced a change to its bidding practices that will allow more bidders to pursue items in online auctions. Effective immediately, the increments in which collectors can bid in Internet absentee bidding will be cut in half. The change will not affect live bidding (including [HA.com]( in order to save live bidders time by keeping the bidding in live sessions moving at a brisk pace. "This change will benefit both buyers and sellers," Heritage Auctions Co-Founder Jim Halperin said. "Cutting in half the size of bid increments will increase the confidence and aggressiveness of buyers who are unsure about increasing a bid, and it benefits the sellers by making more clients more likely to leave a proxy bid on a wider array of available lots." The change is significant for Heritage Auctions, as approximately 60% of Heritage Auctions' 2018 sales were conducted online. With more than 40 categories of art, jewelry, collectibles and other valuable objects, Heritage Auctions is the largest auction house founded in the United States and the world's leading collectibles auctioneer.
