CAC. Block 8, Second Head of 1837, Breen-6144, Variety 15, JD-1, R.7 as a proof]( High quality rare gold was the story as the [April 25-29 Heritage Chicago US Coin Auction]( sold close to $21 million in rare coins overall. The [April 26 Platinum Night session]( by itself, featured close to $10.7 million in numismatic treasures changing hands. This auction was held in conjunction with the Central States Numismatic Society convention, as were auctions of [world currency]( ending April 30, and [US currency,]( continuing through May 1. All prices include a 20% Buyer's Premium. Leading the results was a [proof 1836 quarter eagle, graded PR65+ Deep Cameo by PCGS](. Seven examples of this coin are confirmed in all varieties as proofs, with this coin, bearing the Head of 1837 that indicates the JD-1 variety, accounting for three of those. This is the sole such example available to collectors, as the other two are in the Smithsonian and British Museum collections. This rarity sold for $396,000. Another rare quarter eagle is the 1854-S, boasting a mintage of a minuscule 246 pieces. This coin is unknown higher than AU53 and is thus under high demand in all grades, with twelve pieces definitively traced. [The PCGS-graded VF35 example in this auction]( sold for $264,000. The low-mintage (483 pieces) Panama-Pacific $50 Round is a highlight in every auction in which it appears, and this auction featured [an example graded MS66 by PCGS]( tied for the highest graded such coin seen by that service. This coin, blessed with the CAC seal of approval, brought the highest price Heritage has ever seen for this coin, a robust $336,000. [A similar coin graded MS64+ by PCGS and also certified by CAC]( sold for $144,000. [1911 $10 PR67 PCGS Secure. The specimen comes from a preeminent source of fine American gold specimens, Eagle's Nest Mine (Mystery Wind Mine) in Sage Hill in Placer County, California, and features a magnificent leafy sheet of gold sitting atop a shapely matrix of white quartz. The gold "spray" exhibits good octahedrons, adding to the charm of the piece that would fit well in any serious collection. The gold sheet measures a full five inches at its longest point. "Beautiful gold specimens always draw shrewd collectors, and this auction has eight gold lots for collectors at all levels," said Craig Kissick, Director of Nature & Science at Heritage Auctions. "We also have a really wide array of collector-grade mineral specimens, including numerous colorful crystal examples that show the range of ways in which nature can produce stunning art." A massive [Gold Nugget]( (est. $30,000-50,000) from the Bendigo Goldfields in Victoria, Australia, is exceptionally attractive from any angle. The color is brilliant, which is the result of a beautiful luster and expert preparation. Weighing a hefty 22 troy ounces, it includes minor embedded white quartz within a few crevices. Here is how they work: OR: If you use a search term with the word OR, you are looking for anything that matches either the term on the left side of OR, or the term on the right side of OR. For example, a search for "This or That" (no quotes) returns everything with the term "This" as well as everything with the term "That". This is known to cause some problems when people use searches, and especially wantlists with a keyword like "MS68 or better". Instead of returning everything in MS68, MS69, and MS70, as the searcher clearly intends, this keyword will return everything with the term MS68, plus everything with the term "better". It completely ignores items in MS69 and MS70 unless they have one of the terms "MS68" or "Better" in the text being searched. Remember - computers do not speak English! AND: If you use a search term with the word AND, you are looking for anything that matches both the term on the left side of AND and the term on the right side of AND. For example, a search for "This and That" (no quotes) returns only those items that match both the word "This" and the word "That". Incidentally, you will get exactly the same result if you use the term "This That" (no quotes) as if you use the term "This and That" (no quotes). AND is implied on all multi-keyword searches. NOT: If you use a search term with the word NOT, you are looking for anything that matches the term on the left side of NOT, but does not match the term on the right side of NOT. For example, a search for "This not That" (no quotes) returns everything that matches "This", except for those items that also match "That". You can get around these functions by enclosing your search term in quotes. For example, if you are looking for something that includes the exact phrase "This and That", use the search term (with quotes) "This and That". This is especially important when looking for movie titles, which are more likely to use one of the words. Once in the private collection of late actress Debbie Reynolds, [Norman Rockwell Ben Franklin's Sesquicentennial, The Saturday Evening Post cover, May 29, 1926]( (est. $800,000-1,200,000) was commissioned in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and is Rockwell's only cover illustration featuring a Founding Father. "Norman Rockwell is one of the most beloved American artists who ever lived," said Aviva Lehmann, Director of American Art. "Collectors of American art are drawn in great number to his works, as they immediately increase the strength and impact of any collection. The offerings in this auction span decades and many aspects of Rockwell's career, allowing collectors at all levels to get involved." Another Rockwell expected to spark significant interest is [Norman Rockwell The Census Taker, The Saturday Evening Post cover study, 1940]( (est. $250,000-350,000). While amusing, The Census Taker also documented a serious and important event in American History, the 1940 U.S. Census, which occurred April 1, only weeks before the April 27 debut of this Post cover. [Norman Rockwell Stealing Socks, Interwoven Stocking advertisement, 1928]( (est. $200,000-300,000) serves as a primary example of Rockwell's skillful ability to present an enduring and heartwarming image that continues to resonate with the public even decades after its creation. Stealing Socks served as an advertisement for Interwoven Stocking that first appeared in The Saturday Evening Post on Feb. 11, 1928. Rockwell's [Before the Shot, The Saturday Evening Post cover study, 1958]( (est. $150,000-250,000) is a preparatory study for an illustration that graced the March 15, 1958 cover of The Saturday Evening Post. The scene takes place in the interior of Stockbridge (Massachusetts) physician Dr. Donald Campbell's office. Dr. Campbell was the model for the doctor, but while the little boy (Terry Locke) posed, Rockwell's favored model Louis Lamone served as the doctor's stand-in. One of the artist's most iconic and most popular images, the present study was exhibited alongside the final painting at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge. Rockwell rarely expressed his own political opinions, but [Norman Rockwell The Day I Painted Ike (All through that grind of turning on different moods, he never lost patience. At the end-by golly, it was time to go fishing.), The Saturday Evening Post interior illustration, 1952]( (est. $120,000-180,000) depicts the 34th president of the United States, of whom Rockwell was an unabashed fan; he even referred to himself as an "Eisenhower worshipper." So intense was Rockwell's admiration for Eisenhower that Ben Hibbs, then editor of the Saturday Evening Post, wrote to Rockwell saying, "If Ike is elected, as I think he will be, no small share of the credit should go to Norman Rockwell." Golden Age Illustration is extremely well represented in the auction, including six works by Joseph Christian Leyendecker. [Living Mannequin, The Saturday Evening Post cover, March 5, 1932]( (est. $120,000-180,000), comes from the Estate of Harry Glass, of Long Island, New York. The painting originally sold at the 1943 U.S. War Bond at the United States Treasury-Saturday Evening Post War Bond Show, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The auction also includes two important works by artists of the Hudson River School: [John S. Jameson Grazing Sheep at Headwaters of a Stream, 1862]( (est. $40,000-60,000) casts a spotlight on Jameson's enormous talent, and also raises the question of what he could have accomplished had he not lost his life at the age of 22 after being captured while fighting in the Civil War. The influence of the Hudson River School on the young prodigy is evident in the expansive landscape and exploration into theatrical light and weather effects. Depicting lush green fields with a rocky stream in the foreground, Jameson populates his scenery with cattle, a figure in red that creates a focal point to draw the eye in, and provides the viewer with a glimpse of the mountainous view beyond. [Joseph Rusling Meeker Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, 1880]( (est. $20,000-30,000) was discovered recently in Concord, Massachusetts and is inscribed by the artist "Lake Pontchartrain, La." Above his monogram signature. The large scale and specified location suggest it might have been executed as an exhibition entry, perhaps at the New Orleans World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exhibition in 1884.
