"An estimated seven examples of the 1836 Classic Head quarter eagle are presumed to exist in various grades," said Greg Rohan, President of Heritage Auctions. "The proof offered in our Platinum Night Auction claims the most illustrious pedigree of any other known specimens, with ownership tied to famous numismatists Lorin G. Parmelee, John Mills, William H. Woodin and Louis Eliasberg, Sr., among others." The Central States auctions include a plethora of early copper, early type, gold, patterns and silver rarities, with an emphasis on rare proof and branch mint gold and patterns. A newly discovered [1856-O Liberty Double Eagle, PCGS Genuine. XF Details]( considered by some to be the rarest gold coin struck at the New Orleans Mint, makes its auction debut at Central States. The discovery is a history-making opportunity for advanced collectors to obtain a particularly special 1856-O, a coin already listed among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins. A classic rarity in the American gold series, an [1883 Liberty Double Eagle, PR64 Deep Cameo]( is one of 26 examples certified from the small proof-only mintage of 92 pieces. The PR64 Deep Cameo on offer marks its first auction appearance in 55 years. The convention auctions also include several standout lots from first-time consignors as well as unusual discoveries, such as [a 48-piece grading set for 1879-CC Morgan dollars]( (has one each of both the "Perfect" CC mintmark as well as the "Capped Die" CC mintmark) — a tremendously challenging set to assemble yet offered as a single lot. The auctions feature nine named private collections, highlighted by the Collection of William Rau. A collector since the 1950s, Rau's research into U.S. pattern coins recently earned recognition by the American Numismatic Association. On offer are more than 250 lots from his collection, including standout finds, such as an [1867 Quarter Eagle, PR65 Red, PCGS]( struck in copper, and an [1870 Standard Silver Half Dollar, PR65 PCGS]( struck in aluminum. Other important patterns include unique coins such as a Judd-1598A [1879 Washlady Half Dollar, Unique, AU Details, Net PR40]( a Judd-428A [1865 Quarter Dollar, NGC Details, Proof, struck from Michigan ore]( and a Judd-1274 [1867 Five Cent Muling in nickel, PR45.]( Among branch mint gold rarities on offer are an [1861-D Liberty Five, AU55, NGC]( and an [1854-S Quarter Eagle, VF35 PCGS](. The latter coin is one of 12 known surviving 1854-S quarter eagles of the 246 examples struck with this date. The coin's pedigree includes the Davis-Graves and Norweb Collections. [Back to Top](#top) []A World of Money: A Phenomenally Rare Triple-Thickness 3 Speciedaler Our [April 20-23 Chicago Coin Expo World Coins Signature Auction]( features, among many other treasures, a [1666-dated 3 Speciedaler from Norway]( that is, quite simply, a once in a lifetime offering. This extraordinary denomination is never seen at auction, and only two 3 Speciedalers of Frederik III of any date known to be in private collections (1652 and 1668). Until this example recently surfaced in Maryland, this date was presumed unique in this denomination, the only known specimen purchased in 1831 and forming part of the Royal Collection in the National Museum of Copenhagen. [Frederik III 3 Speciedaler 1666-FG VF Details (Reverse Graffiti) NGC]( [Frederik III 3 Speciedaler 1666-FG VF Details (Reverse Graffiti) NGC]( This present specimen is consequently only the second of the type known to exist, and the first to be offered for sale in nearly two hundred years. It is remarkably attractive for its certified VF Details grade, boldly-detailed and alight with a red-gold patina over dove-gray surfaces, the central devices gifted three dimensions through a darker tone in the recesses. At 10 and 2 o'clock around the central reverse shield two words have been lightly inscribed in contemporary style, appearing to the cataloger to read 'Jens' and 'Pham', possibly a name and certainly deserving of further research, possibly even a clue as to its provenance. From most angles this graffiti fades into invisibility, only noticeable when turned towards the light, and certainly not a detraction from the overall appearance of this piece. To the best of our knowledge, this particular example has never before been offered at auction, and so we are excited to be able to debut it here. This is likely the only chance collectors will have to obtain a 3 Speciedaler of any date let alone one of 1666, and we expect serious collectors to bid accordingly. This coin is deserving of centerpiece status in any elite collection of the Norwegian numismatic series. The jersey originally sold for $2.05 million in Heritage's "Heroes of Sport" auction in November 2017. "The winning bidder in November is one of the savviest collectors we know," explained Chris Ivy, Director of Sports Auctions for Heritage. "He's a believer that if you buy the best of the best, there will always be somebody out there willing to pay more. That philosophy really paid off for him here." Heritage's Make Offer to Owner program has put over $25 million in the pockets of winning bidders since its 2009 rollout. The $550,000 increase in value of Robinson's rookie jersey is the service's single largest transaction. The program set a record in 2017 as single-year sales surged to more than $10 million. Clients who enroll in Make Offer to Owner have the opportunity to bid on items in select auctions within 72 hours after the conclusion of the sale for all items that have been in inventory for more than 30 days. Those who make an anonymous offer to will have their information transmitted by Heritage to the lot's owner, who then has the option of accepting or rejecting the offer, or presenting a counteroffer for the Make Offer to Owner client's consideration. Heritage retains 10 percent of the total price as a commission and waives all credit card and/or PayPal fees. Transactions are managed through HA.com, which protects the privacy of all parties. [Sir Arthur Conan Doyle penned The Adventure of the Dancing Men]( in 1903 for publication in The Strand Magazine. Doyle's first two novellas featuring Sherlock Holmes were published more than a decade earlier to positive reviews, but it was not until the appearance of his short stories in The Strand Magazine that Doyle's popularity and fame surged. According to Randall Stock, a member of The Baker Street Irregulars, Doyle got the idea for the dancing men cipher in May 1903. Stock says, "While staying at the Hill House Hotel in Norfolk (England), Doyle signed a young woman's autograph book. The book also contained drawings on another page by two children: Gilbert John Cubitt and Edith Alice Cubitt had signed it using decorated letters and a stick-figure sketch involving music." Combining elements used by the children and influenced by Edgar Allan Poe's The Gold Bug, Doyle crafted the dancing men cipher. He used the children's surname, "Cubitt," for the client in the story. The significance of the Dancing Men manuscript (est. $500,000+) cannot be overstated. This is an actual working manuscript that shows Doyle's complete process in weaving a story. Emendations run throughout, and Doyle is careful to cross out words and make additions in such a way that both the original text and revisions are visible. Provenance of the manuscript can be traced back to Doyle, when he donated the bound manuscript to an auction for the benefit of the Red Cross in 1918. The current owner and consignor was gifted the manuscript by her father, a noted book dealer in Texas. Like most Sherlock Holmes stories, The Adventure of the Dancing Men is told from the perspective of Watson, who tells the tale through first-person narration. The plot centers around a series of messages containing the stick figures that arrive at the home of Hilton Cubitt and his American wife, Elsie Patrick. While Holmes endeavors to decipher the code and determine the source of the notes, both Cubitt and Patrick are shot — Cubitt fatally (making this one of just two stories in which a client dies after seeking Holmes' help). Holmes is able to identify Patrick's former fiancé as the killer by sending back notes using the stick figures. "The Dancing Men manuscript was last offered at auction more than 90 years ago," says Sandra Palomino, director of historical manuscripts at Heritage Auctions. "We had the privilege of appraising the manuscript back in 2012," Palomino says, "and we are thrilled to be selected to bring it to auction. Although other Doyle manuscripts have appeared in recent years, The Adventure of the Dancing Men is a highpoint in the Doyle canon." The manuscript will be on display at Heritage Auctions' New York offices located at 445 Park Avenue from April 9 through April 12.
